I'm sorry the TWRA is having to deal with this sunset crap! I know I bust chops on here alot but I really deep down know you guys do a great job at managing our state wildlife! I think hunting is at an all time best in TN and TWRA is the backbone for that! The statements I make and the questions I ask are not for that I think TWRA is doing a bad job or not doing their job at all, its just asking can we tweak it or do better with it?

Ruger can you put a sticky up telling everyone who they need to contact and what bill needs to be voted for or against?

I agree with you bigwes50,.. i'm sorry twra has to go thru this political backstabbing. It looks like TWRA made a biological management decision, more than likely backed up by in depth research and data, to tweak a limit on fishermen on a east tn lake,. and it has turned on them(TWRA) by complaining fishermen and one specific sorry political figure trying to show his political powers!! All this will be fixed and over as soon as TWRA caves into the political agenda of this rep. and the fishermen he represents. Politics will over-ride a management decision it looks like!! Very sad ,.. IMO!!

Absolutely ridiculous!!
I, for one, will contact my State Rep. and Senator, and make my opinion known! I'm not talking about my feelings for a 2 buck limit either; rather the outstanding and consistant management of our wildlife resources by the TWRA.

“We felt it is important to make all those affected by the operation of the TWRA and the TWRC aware of what could possibly happen,” said Carter in an e-mailed news release. “We did not want our constituents or anyone else to find out about this at the 11th hour. Knowing where we stand with both the House and the Senate at this moment, our agency felt an obligation not only to the sportsmen of Tennessee, but all citizens who enjoy boating and wildlife watching, to let them know of the situation and the potential consequences regarding the future of the TWRA and its governing body, the TWRC."
What are the "potential consequences"? The end of hunting and fishing as we know it? That's hard for me to believe! I want to here some facts and not just negative speculation. How would this affect me and every other sportsman?

If the legislature does not extend TWRA/TWRC this legislative session, then starting July 1 of this year TWRA will begin winding down. If there is no action in the 2011 legislative session TWRA will cease to exist July 1, 2011.

TWRA will cease to exist if nothing is done. I guess the legislature could let you pay your license dollars into TDEC and let them set the seasons......
It would be pure speculation to go past the fact that TWRA will cease to exist as an agency unless it is extended.

From a pure financial stand point, it would seem very expensive to shut down TWRA and create a new agency.... JMO

Do any other states do this? Are other states' DNR the same as TDEC?

Yeah nevermind is right FH.
We had a similar slot change at DH a few years back with a more restrictive slot and low and behold the fishing improved. Imagine that!! If they're too ignorant to see it over there then let em have the old slot TWRA. They can scratch their heads and wonder why the big smallmouth aint biting. Dragging TWRA in the mud for trying to help your fishery improve. Morons! Amazing. Emails sent.

I think the change would be for the worse. Currently in the state of TN the TWRA is run by professionals with very little interference from the politicians of the state. The money that is in TWRA's budget comes from the hunters and fishermen in this state and it is used exclusively for the things that concern them directly. The lifetime license money is held in a fund and only the interest is used out of that fund. What do you think the legislature do if it had access to that money that was put there by sportsmen and only sportsmen? Just look at the Social Security Trust fund that has been decimated by politicians to fund other programs. We need to have professionals managing our wildlife and the money we pay to allow them to do so.

The agency would cease to exist and wildlife management decisions would be made by the legislature (seasons/limits).

If this were to happen, who would be responsible for the law enforcement side of the deal? Regular county officers might put some green britches on and become cross dressers. Squirrel cops\Barney all under one job description.

Ok so one thing i noticed about this thread is there are bits and pieces of what is going on, but no one has actually come out and told the whole story. I know it has something to do with slot limits on small mouth on an E TN lake, but I don't understand how people being upset about it could shut down the TWRA. I know there is a politician involved and that is always dangerous, but i was wondering if someone who knows all the facts can explain exactly what is going on or point me in the direction of the story, b/c i haven't seen/heard anything.

If the "sun sets" on TWRA you could have 95 different deer seasons for one...seasons set by Private Acts. There could be non-hunters/anti-hunters making decisions that affect your hunting. Loss of Public Land.............the list is long.

What ever happened to the "good ole days", when politics were somewhat reasonable. It seems nowdays, that politics want to control everything. Even hunting and fishing.
I'm not a historian, but it does seem like I remember this not working in other countries over the last 80+ years.
I won't say the word, but I think some older folks might know what I'm talking about.

"CHANGE" is not always good... I know a few examples that come to mind..
Here here!!

This could definitely lead to some very bad things for us as TN sportsmen. Dove hunting voted away because their cute little birds, things like that, etc. I really dont want to see it happen but this is pretty well on par for how politicians are these days.

I too hope this doesnt go through, but I also hope TWRA takes this to heart and puts forth a little more effort in communicating with those buying licenses and permits, etc.
