I think the most important thing that has helped me be successful today and in the past was the LACK of technology, and not the other way around.

Back in the 70's, when I walked in to the deer woods, I had my clothes, a snack , a compass and my weapon........

Not having access to internet sites where I could find aerials and not having every little gadget in the world to help me made me a better hunter, IMO.

I learned to pay alot more attention to details back then. I didn't have anything to draw deer to me like food plots, deer calls or mineral blocks...etc. I didn't have cameras to tell me what was out there. I din't have range finders, croosbows, high spped bows or even scoped MZs......

What i did have was an unending desire to learn all that i could about deer and not by reading magazines or watching videos.....

Most of my learning came in the field, trial and error and many days of just walking, taking notes and storing away all the info I could.

I've said here before that I'm not so sure that I would be the hunter than I am today or love it quite so much if I had started when everything was so EASY........and yes, compared to deer hunting back then, today it is much easier...IMO.

My wife told me one time that she has no idea how I am able to "not miss anything".......By that she means that I rarely NOT SEE SOMETHING......

She is exactly the opposite. She has no idea what's going on around her at any given time......I am in total control of what I see and know about my surroundings. I have my early days of deer hunting to thank for that....

So, I guess the main factor would be my "early years" and couple that with tons of patience and desire and you have...ME!!

haha

I know what makes me a succesful hunter...100% of the time...Its because if I can find myself in the woods, then my goals are achevied before, or if, the killing ever takes place...My main objective is to kill what ever my goals are at the time, but if I don't, I still feel justified in my endevour.. \:\)

I've given it some thought today and narrowed it down to my good looks, charming
personality and early days teachings as a tiltawhirl operator with a traveling
carnival.

Seriously I like coaches answer best that's the kind of things that makes me
feel successful too.

Having fun and enjoying the day. Not making it a chore or trying to justify my deer kills to anyone.

Well, I can't say that I am always succesful but when I figured out how to stay awake while on stand, I stopped seeing sheep and started seeing deer! Those Summit stands are pretty darn cozy!
