In your opinion, what percentage of on-line check-ins will be completely accurate in regards to sex?

I know what most will say......."dishonest people will be dishonest anyway", but I don't necessarily believe that.....they say that a lock keeps honest people honest.....the same applies here, IMO. Most people WILL check a deer in and be forced to do it correctly at a check-in station, but maybe not, in the privacy of their own home. These people will just suck it up and use that last buck tag or shoot a doe and check it in as a buck.

If a hunter can kill an animal , get it home , skin it and dispose of the head and genitals, then it can be anything that they want it to be. If you live in an area like I do where getting checked by a WO is about as likely as getting struck by lightening, then this whole internet check-in is a "free pass", so to speak. The biggest obstacle is getting the deer from the field to the house.

How many people do you think will sit at their computer this coming season with a small buck hanging in the backyard and two bucks tagged in the freezer and check-in a DOE? They may intend to check it in as their LAST buck tag, but once they get that far , with just a simple push of a button he can keep that last buck tag......sort of like a "lock-less door", wouldn't you say???

Do you really have faith in the average hunter out there? Do you think that the end of season harvest numbers will be accurate or even close?

I'd be interested in hearing what others think on this.....

Myself, I have not killed two bucks in one season more than one time in many many years. I prefer doe meat over buck meat, regardless of the age and since I don't pull the trigger just to pull the trigger....well, you get my drift. This issue doesn't really pertain to me simply because I never even get close to my limit, so I like the internet check-in. But, I'll never have any reason to lie on there....

I know there will be no way to know for sure about the accuracy of these internet check-in numbers so what do ya'll think......?

thanks

BH

About the same percentage as are accurate with telephone systems.

I know its a cop out answer BH but best I got.

Honest people will be honest.

I will say I believe TN is more accurate than KY because TN allows 3 bucks. Claiming the first one isnt nearly as big of a deal...or the second really.

My prediction is that the internet check in will 100% reflect exactly what anyone put down for their deer. Honest people put down honest answers and dishonest people tried to cheat the system.

alot of dishonest hunters just took the deer on to the house in the first place so don't think it will be that much of a difference i'm sure some will take advantage of it that didn't before

Anytime it is made easier to cheat the more people will. A good example is when there is a disaster and all the law officers are busy look how much more looting and stealing goes on. In other words the fear of getting caught is what keeps some from breaking the law. Remove some of that fear and more will cave in.

I would like to see some results of what was checked in on the net as far as categories go.

If I was asked to give my honest opinion, I believe the accuracy of our data has gone down with the advent of internet check. The unfortunate reality is that we will never know exactly how it was affected. This however, is the balancing act our agency must conduct. We must try to collect quality information to help us manage the resource while maintaining a high level of hunter satisfaction. Hunter satisfaction was slipping slightly due to the inconvenience of check stations, especially with the cost of gas hitting peaks of $4.00/gal. This internet check gives hunters a very reasonable alternative. Most hunters either have internet service or know someone that does. I believe it's a very reasonable compromise.

All you can control is yourself BH. Personally, I look at the world through rose colored glasses and therefore give almost everybody the benefit of the doubt.

Do what is right. Encourage your friends to do what is right. Rest good at night!

We have to leave the rest to the TWRA.

BH, my experience at check stations for the last 20 years has been absolutely negative. I havent had a deer looked at by anybody checking them and more times than not the info they put down will be incorrect even with you telling them what to enter.
I have much more faith in the hunters entering the correct info than 99% of all quick stop check stations!

I don't think anyone would be more dishonest by checking in a deer on the net than check station check in only. There are some people that are going to cheat no matter what system you use but anyone that goes to the trouble to check in via the net will be honest about it or they would not check in at all.

I AM FOR TELECHECK

In that scenario at least they are checking it in as a kill for total numbers sake. Where I hunt I doubt half the deer killed are ever checked in at all.

I know probably 6-8 people, Haywood County Residents, that checked deer in on the internet last year, that stated that pryor to the internet they were not checking in deer because of check stations being closed to to far to drive to, the bad is sometimes being offset by the good

I guess nothing is perfect, so the internet system is good for the honest......

Would you think that the numbers could ever be skewed enough by bad check-in practices that the TWRA would make a wrong decision on management...?

just wondering...

thanks

I used it for the first time this year. I kileed a average 8 pointer on New Year's Day. There were no checking stations open ANYWHERE. I went home, and pulled up the website and followed the instructions. It was the easiest thing to do on the internet. I know that honesty is what is in question here. I can only be honest in my own regards. Everyone else should make the right decisions in their own regards. I will say that the last few deer I had physically checked in at the "local market" was never viewed by anyone at the store. I could have lied, and no one there would have cared either way. Just do what is right.

I used it for a doe I killed this year. It's easy and convenient. I used check stations for two more deer I killed and like you said, nobody ever came out to see what I had.

huntinman,
Well said. The only deer that that I ever checked in at a
business, that was viewed some who worked there, was in 08 when
I said he has 12 points. It's something about the "number of
points" that causes interest. The 12 pointer did score 160, but
two years earlier, I checked a 9 pointer at the same location,
but when I said 9 points, no one even looked up.

Score on the 9 pointer.......140.

Awesome deer RK.

There are very few stores these days that care about the deer or the hunters anymore. There was a BP station on hwy 100 that used to come out and snap a polaroid and put them on their "Wall", but I doubt it happens anymore. The store owners don't pay their employees to snap pictures etc...They want them behind the counters tending the til, observing customers, and making sure no one drives off without paying for the gas.

I will probably stick with the internet check-in from here on out, unless I happen to be driving by the checking station.
