Yeah, it's a little overwhelming to look at. I don't have a gps that will hold topos, so I didn't even bother. I see that garmin is starting to produce 24k maps, but of course, they don't have one for our region.

I've also seen that they are supporting some type of a beta release that lets you create and download custom 24K maps from google maps. From what I've read, it can only cover a couple square miles, it's still really buggy and it bombs frquently. Something to keep an eye on though.

I wonder how practical it would be to have 7.5 minute map on a gps? Is there really enough screen for it to be useful? I would like some experience with one.

I was able to use "Mapwell 2009" and either/or "Moagu" to create an image map that I was able to transfer to my GPS.
It took a little bit of time and had to keep going to the turtorial and online to get it done but it worked. It was easier for me to do as I had a digital copy of a image map that had grid lines that made it easier to "register" (identify points on the map so that the computer and GPS would recognize locations).
With this program, if you get the USGS maps, you can do a screen shot and use them in this program.
My GPS ran slow as the image that I had was a high quality, color picture. USGS maps may not be as large in file size and thus run faster.
Please dont ask me how I did it, like I said, I used the tutorial and online help.

In addition to the two programs above, this is the source of software that I used to create a map for my GPS.

It has been so long that I have used it, If asked, I would'nt be of much help.
