Well, I can only speak for myself, I've done my fair share of hunting in the tn mountains and while the terrain is tougher I didn't have any problems. If your in good physical condition and are a experienced hunter you can adapt to just about any conditions. I strongly disagree with your assumption that someone from west tn couldn't adapt. I think anyone can adapt... I had to adapt from hunting in FL to E. TN. There was a big learning curve. We are talking about throwing somebody into the mix, it might not be so easy at first... Everything takes time but it might not take as long, the hunt the other way around.....JMO

populations are in the Southern Appalachian mountain region?
Poor habitat quality. Those areas can't support high deer densities. Are you sure about the above statement? The areas which are huntable in this part of the world which are Southern App., have good deer densities, and the habitat is not what most habitat minded people would consider poor. I am sure there are plenty of Southern App areas which do fall into your description, but certainly not all of them. It is an awfully broad stroke to say that Southern App are poor habitat and have low deer densities, when there is plenty of acres out there with very good habitat and very good deer densities.
Without question there are exceptions. But the question was asked with a broad brush so I responded with a broad brush.

I live in the mtns just across in NC and I agree about the mature bucks. Just no booners.
Booners will be few and far between, but I'm sure they exist. Just not at the percentages they exist in the best habitat.

Doskil, I don't know...I've hunted Ashe,Watuga, and Pisgah National Forrest area and have seen and taken some good ones 140 class. And that some rough terrain.
BSK, you have said on several topics that deer will adapt to just about anything right...Well I think that the Appalachian Mountain deer have done extremely well and the deer density has improved every year..but I know it isn't the best habitat but they adapt...

Here in the mtns of NC I think we've produced only two bucks over 170 inches
Not sure how it is in TN
Habitat just looks better to me

If I were a Whitetail Deer, I would want to live in the thickest
and most mountainest area there is. My antlers might not be that
big, but I could probably enjoy a few more sunrises and sunsets.

I agree on both parts... A mountain deer might reach between 3.5-5.5 but will never have the same rack as other deer in better environments... This won't stop me from hunting the mountains because there are a few freaks out there. If I wanted antlers I would save my money (equipment) and pay to go hunt antlers... There are several places out there that will take my money and help me get a wallhanger.....
