A book entitled "Voices From the Bayou." by Charles Frank. His father owned a huge shipping company in New Orleans. Charlie, himself an older man whose main passion is collecting hand-carved duck decoys. In the process of that, he started recording stories from the old-time market hunters. These guys had a quaota of 100 ducks a day for which they were paid a quarter each and given the feathers. The salted or iced ducks were then sent by boat to New Orleans-his father's shipping company and then shipped by rail to New York.

Now to the trivia question that started this thread. Who do you think proposed the first limits on ducks in LA? Who do you think started wildlife management in this country?

Probably someone who thought they could make money off of it.

No idea, but a restaurant over in West Nashville serves "salted duck", and it's suppose to be pretty good.

Aldo Leopold has been given credit by most who care.

Theodore Roosevelt has been credited by some, but I think he is more responsible for setting aside National Parks like Yellowstone.

The game laws, for the most part, were brought about by the hunters in generl and the market hunters in particular. Teddy inacted a lot of them Aldo certainly played a huge part. But the request for the laws came from the hunters.

IF YOU HAVE NOT READ ALDO'S BOOK...YOU MUST DO SO. It is still one of the finest books on wildlife managem, ent ever written. There is also a book by Marie Sandoz abnd for the life of me, I can't recall the name of it. Goodle her and look up the book she wrote about her father. He was a friend and compatriot of Aldo.

Now...let me say this, not asking for sympathy. I start a new round of treatment today. My memory and motor skills are shot to he11 and are probably going to get worse. Just bear with me. I'll probably spend the next few days puking. I always look forward to that.

So, do I win an Aldo book for getting the correct answer?

Yes you do. I don't have one but if you can find one, it is yours.

My memory just kicked in. Marie Sandoz's book was Old Jules. May be had to find but a must read.

I think it is important to remember, and to let the world know, that Hunters and Fishermen imposed excise taxes and regulations on themselves. They are the ones that wanted to conserve our natural resources, and to this day, they are the only ones that pay for conservation efforts. All the bunny huggers and bird watchers out there need to thank those that hunt and fish for the wildlife we have, because they were the first to notice the declines and they were the only ones to act on them.

The problem facing sportsmen today is we do not stand up for ourselves. We have very few organized groups fighting on our behalf. We need more people that understand "Only the mountain has lived long enough to listen objectively to the howl of the wolf" and we have too many people "that can live without wild things". That neds to change.

Off my soap box now.

I will send a copy of "A Sand County Almanac" to the first person to PM me. All I ask is that you put it back up here to pass on when you finish it.

Trust we, once you start it, you will finish it within a day or so.

Now that right there is one fine offer. I would do the same with Old Jules but Marie gave it to me and told me I would have liked her father. I'll never let that sucker out of this house.

If only the people of this great nation could get this through their heads!

Great post. Most people cant comprehend me telling them that in the fall I rut and in the spring I strut...and I fish in all the other "downtime". I have thought to myself, "what do people that dont hunt and fish do on the weekends" - because when I have a weekend with nothing planned, all I do is sit on the couch and watch tv.....thats such a boring life. I look for things to do...play golf, but thats about it. God bless people that cant wait for the weekend to come for nothing to do "thats productive"....I love the outdoors, to say the least!!!!! I wish others could experience it. THATS why introducing people and especially kids into the outdoors is crucial...especially in this day in age. This tradition MUST persevere!

I don't agree. It would take many words to explain that. But to put it simply the problem facing sportsmen...Wait a mintue. What do we mean by sportsmen?

Golfers don't seem me to be having a problem. Don't we mean hunters? So what is our problem? It isn't anti hunters as far as I can tell. They are helpless. So what is our problem? Could it be us?

Stand up for what? What do we have to stand up for? Is it the right to hunt? How do you figure we have a right to hunt. Where is that in the Constitution?

I am 100% for hunters standing up, been doing it all my life, appeared in front of several senate committees...but I wonder, stand up for what.

Let's answer that question...first.
