I can say with 100% certainty that the mtns along the TN/KY border have some of the biggest deer I have seen/photoed, in the SE. You would not believe just how many giant bucks live in that part of the world. More on the TN side, but plenty still in KY. And no one hunting them. Beats anything I have ever seen.

I can't remember ever doing that in E. TN. Lets face it, you have more deer and less sloping terrain in W. TN.... I did mention in my first post a few of you would be after me.... JMO

Just curious, what kind (size) "deer"? Not implying anything negative, I just think it's relative to the thread.

I'm talking about any size deer. I killed my biggest in E. TN but it took a lot of years of learning.... I have killed my easiest in W. Tn....

Heres a couple of 3.5 year olds that I killed in the mountains of E. TN the last two years. I also let bucks walk but I'm not for changing the buck limits...

P.S. I have not shot a doe in three seasons... Its not from a lack of trying. I shot over ones back durning archery season this past year and I have seen three time more bucks the last three seasons...

After hunting the rugged terrain of the northern plateau and the farmlands of west Tenn. I would have to say the hunting is much easier in Henry than in Scott County. There are more deer and the terrain is not rugged.

Any good hunter will be successful given enough time. I prefer the mountains because they are definately more challenging and much more scenic.

No offense meant to anyone on their "mtn" deer, and I mean seriously no disrespect those are super nice deer for anywhere. However, there are tons of animals in the higher elevations here that make those look small. Not that I wouldn't shoot any of the above at first sight, but just to let you all know that there are plenty of tremendous bucks on every mountain side in this part of the state.

I totally agree SM. The following year after I took the 10 point in the previous post, I saw a dandy 8 pt that would have came close to maybe even outscoring the 10pt. We won't discuss what happened in that I didn't get to shoot him.... \:\/

Poor habitat quality. Those areas can't support high deer densities.

However, those low deer densities are offset by the fact that hunting access is difficult in the mountains. This leads to a very advanced buck age structure. Now most of those mature bucks won't be sporting huge antlers because of the poor habitat quality, but every once and a while the area produces a really top-end buck.

Have enough mature bucks and just by the odds eventually a whopper is produced.

Are you sure about the above statement? The areas which are huntable in this part of the world which are Southern App., have good deer densities, and the habitat is not what most habitat minded people would consider poor. I am sure there are plenty of Southern App areas which do fall into your description, but certainly not all of them. It is an awfully broad stroke to say that Southern App are poor habitat and have low deer densities, when there is plenty of acres out there with very good habitat and very good deer densities.
