I started bass fishing in TN several years back and even fished in a few tournaments. I caught a bass one time with a friend that was from TN and he told me what a hoss it was..... The bass (Largemouth) weight around 6 lbs and was caught while they were bedding. I thought to myself that I have caught several bass bigger then this one while growing up in FL... I started watching the Knoxville paper on Sundays and I noticed the big fish (LUNKER) were only weighting around 5 or 6 lbs in these tournaments around the area. At that point I realized that The bass in TN will never be as big, as the bass in FL. I still love to fish here but it is, what it is... I wonder if that's the same with the deer in TN....
P.S. The deer are alot bigger here, then them FL deer. It most be the soil because all we have is sand down there...

You're exactly right...
there is no point in hunting mature bucks exclusively in TN. But I can be just as happy killing immature 120" 3.5 yr olds in TN as 140" 3.5 yr olds in KY, IL, etc.

I remember reading a while back where they were stocking some Fl bass in some Tn lakes to try to produce bigger bass.Maybe they need to bring some Ky deer down here and stock them.Maybe the guys wanting us to be like Ky will be happy then.

FL has serious issues, and having zero experience there I won't even venture a guess as to why, but sandy soils produce fine deer not far from the state line.

On avg. N. FL is where the big ones come from.... The soil is the difference, because for the most part the regs were the same down there years ago.... Kill all the ones you could load up. One buck per day. Yeah you can kill a freak every once in a while outside of the FL panhandle but thats like any state. One of the biggest bucks every killed in TN non-typ. was killed in E. TN. The problem with that is, it's just one out of a million...

The fish difference has to do with the climate zone and growing season- not soil.
Deer , it is the opposite-----------simple

On the east TN buck stuff, there are many bucks here right now, which would blow away any deer I have seen posted on this forum from last season, which was killed in TN. 160"+ bucks are all over the mountains here, literally every mountain side seems to have one or two on it, killing them however is not so easy.
gator you would be stunned to know what is lurking just north of us.

You are correct about N. FL being a lot like Ga. and thats where the big ones are normaly killed down there. You are also correct about the big ones lurking in the mountains. The one thing I love about the bucks that I see where I hunt, they have big bodies. Both the bucks (3.5 yrs old) that I killed the last two seasons dressed out over a 150 lbs (one was 163 lbs.). I seen a 10 pt. last year that made both of them look small (body/rack) but I couldn't get a shot.

I spent a ton of this past season trying to kill an absolute monster in the mtns, I am guessing 5.5 years old, and probably 160" at least, he looked like a cow walking amoung goats when he was pushing does around. I cam close several times to killing him, just never could pull it all together.
If folks want to kill big deer in East TN, hunt the mtns. The valley has some nice deer and some big deer, but nothing like what lives in the harder to reach stuff.

Even if Tn. had florida bass they still wouldnt be as big as they are in Florida,but they would be bigger than what we have now.
Average Tn bucks will never be as big as Ky,Ill or Iowa,but they could be bigger given the right opportunity.

You are right. My uncle lives in Tampa, and either lived in Florida for a long time. He told me the deer in Florida are about the size of a big dog. They just don't grow that big down there.
Someone else from Florida told me that the closer to the equator, the deer run smaller. The further away from the equator, the deer are bigger. Kinda made sense to me.
I don't doubt that the fish grow bigger in Florida, though. Especially with the warmer temps and more sunshine.

There's been rumors of them in southwest TN. I think around McKellar Lake. I don't know how true that is, though.
