All this talk about big bucks, B&C and what our state (and TWRA)can do to "help the hunters" kill more of these mature bucks is about to get to me.
IMO, it's basically blaming others for our lack of success.
Here's my thinking.....
How many deer are passed up each year per Booner killed? For every hunter that killed a deer that is registered in B&C each season, I wonder how many deer they let walk and if this is an EVERY YEAR occurance?
Or, for those of us that have never killed or even seen a BOONER on the hoof, how many "sub-100' inch deer do we let walk every year and are we willing to let even more walk every season in order to kill a 130-150 inch deer?
A big question for a hunter , IMO, is this. Will you kill a buck later in the season that you passed earlier in the season, just so that you won't be skunked....?
If you answered YES, then stop whining about big deer, because it is evident that you are your own worst enemy......
Unless we as huners are willing to POLICE ourselves, then why put that job on the TWRA or anyone else?
To me, it's like blaming drugs or alcohol for all your problems in life........blaming something like regulations and limits is the easy way out, IMO.
The next time that you see a 100 inch buck , let him walk. It feels really good. And if you see a 115-120 inch deer next year it may be that same deer. Just think about what he'll be if he makes it to next season,,,and so forth.
Myself, I'd rather kill a 130" plus every two or three years than one or even two 100 inch deer every year.
How about you.....?
I know that we don't have the quantities of Big Bucks in Tn. that they have in other states, but we do have them. I have seen some monsters come out of my home county (Haywood)for many years. This is an every year thing, not just ever so often.
IMO, if we put forth some effort on restraint every year and let most of these NICE deer walk without having to be "TOLD TO" by TWRA limits and restrictions then it's a win win. Instead, most hunters complain about the lack of big deer where they hunt, while they are dragging out a 100 inch buck.
I guess it's just easier to blame the other guy...
Just something else to think about...

I would rather kill several 130"ish bucks each year, and that is the reason I never deviate from my standards, no matter what. It has also helped me meet my goals each year for a long time now. I do not need a state agency to tell me what to shoot, or what to pass. I have matured in my hunting career to the point where I can police myself and the places I hunt. FOR ME, it didn't take too many years of busting rat bucks to decide that it wasn't fun, and that I was willing to wait to hold antlers, versus toothpicks. But that is just me, and I don't need TWRA to hold my hand while I try to accomplish my goals. If anything I just want to have the opp. to hunt when the timing is right, and TWRA allows for that now.
If folks want to kill really nice bucks then they need to start passing on the 110"-120" bucks that fill these pages each season. Forget about the spikes/4 points sure they will someday be good deer, but the ones that really hurt are the 2.5/3.5 year old bucks which need one more year to really be a good deer. Let me be clear though, if people are happy with the 110" 8 pts then by all means kill them, but if your goal is 130"+ bucks you have to let those deer walk to reach your goal.
I find it a little comical all of this B&C talk. It makes me wonder how many folks have little if any understand of just how big a 170" deer is, and how many factors must come together for them to reach that size. It really is almost a freak of nature to reach B&C size, no matter where you live.

I agree setterman and BH. I didnt kill a buck this past year. The two years before I killed my buck in the 110-120 inch range. One was fully mature, Im pretty sure one was a 2.5
This year I passed 3 deer this size. I only saw one shooter, but I went into the year saying "I will not kill a deer this year that after the arrow has left the bow I am wish had another year"
The 3 I passed were all young. They will be great if they get one more year...who knows if I will see them but I am happier having let them walk.

This is why I like Tennesse hunting so much, the regs are designed so you can taylor the style of hunting to YOU!! I have harvested very few bucks in my 20 years of hunting. All three this year were 100"-125". I dont shoot yearlings because I dont like to work that hard for 30 pounds of meat. But I dont think I should be told I cant shoot a deer because his antlers arent big enough. To each there own. In my opinion the regs let YOU manage your property they way you see fit. If I want to see more 150" deer then I need to pratice trigger control. If I want to fill the freezer I can harvest what I want. TWRA has hit a happy medium in my opinion.
