If the state has an area that they want the deer herd to continue to increase why do they not just trap and transfer deer from overpopulated areas to get the herd up to carrying capacity fast?

Isn't that how TN got their deer to begin with? From Michigan and Wisconsin?

Too costly... especially when good sound management of harvest demographics and habitat improvement will take care of the problem in just a few years.

Too costly... especially when good sound management of harvest demographics and habitat improvement will take care of the problem in just a few years. correct, here in the east we had a 1 buck limit for several years, cant tell that it made a huge diffrence, they stocked here til 1985 & in the early years you were required to mark on a map where your deer where taken.the costly part is the biggest detterent with any restocking effort.some area's will never support a large amount of any animals.the elk restocking effort has been a nightmare on several fronts, the #s we see now may go either way a little but my guess is that were close to our limit on #s,mike243

Too costly and mortality due to human handling (capture myopathy: fear stress) can be high.
Let Nature take her course. A healthy herd can double its population every two years. But just remember that some habitat has a very low carrying capacity due to minimal food volume. A truly mature hardwood forest can have a carrying capacity of only 5-10 deer per square mile. That's not many deer. Hunting that type of deer herd may produce a deer sighting only once every full week of hunting.

Got it.
So why bother restocking in the first place if it so expensive and mortality is high?

So why bother restocking in the first place if it so expensive and mortality is high? because the deer & turkey were native to this area, its like growing a garden, you plant a bunch of seeds in hope that enuf come up to make it worth your time ,you know you wont have a bumper crop but a taste of the good stuff is better than nothing ,mike243

You need something to start from. Areas without deer would have eventually gained them through outward dispersal of existing herds, but deer populations could be developed much faster in these areas through transplanting a few "seed" deer.
But once "some deer" are present, Nature will build a herd for you through reproduction.

I read the document on TN deer stocking history and see what you are saying.
Was there ever a case in TN where stocking white tailed deer totally failed?
