If soil and agriculture is what it takes to grow big bucks, then how in the world has KY became the #2 producer of B&C bucks over states in the upper Mid west?

It looks like our new resident KY biologist accredits their success to a one buck limit, though it's not a popular subject to talk about around here.

Has nothing to do with being popular. Close buck season for five years and then compare the number of B&C bucks killed in TN and in KY. Tn should win by a mile.
Right? Let's do it and see.

Not sure about that, but I think bigger bucks would be killed. Don't you?

LMAO-At coach.
And Yodel Dog, I'm not sure I do agree. The operative word being killed. In theory, yes, we should have bigger bucks. But a buck can only get so big, age being just one factor. But I'm sure we have more bucks dying of old age today than of hunters killing them. If all it takes is age, why are there no monsters in Cades Cove?
In the elk pens at UW, we had some bulls that were getting ancient. They had the finest nutrition known of at that time. Not a one of them would score 300. We had mule deer that were 10 years old. Not a one would break 170.
I am not going to do the research, but I'll bet you more big bucks, antler-wise, were killed this year than ever before in TN.
Why do you think that is?
On the Milk River, two years after the horrble EHD outbreak, I hunted with a friend. He said he had never seen so many big bucks.
Go figure!

Interesting. Is the theory for this due to less competition for food?

More bucks staying in the herd each year, inevitably more will reach maximum potential.
If you just take harvest stats alone, KY kills (I think) roughly half the number of bucks we do, so it would seem logical that is the reason for the difference.
