Sounds like a good thread to start: WHO SHOOTS THE FIRST LEGAL DEER THAT WALKS BY?......... Nah, better not.

Don't confuse deer hunting with deer management. Hunting is simple, it is also just one componenent of deer management. But I believe to truly understand hunting, you have to have, at least a basic understaning of management. It as far more than just killing.

Yes it is.

My brother-in-law is the retired dean of the bio-chemistry dept at Penn State. He participates in a forum for biologists and chemists and any subject is open to discussion. Lately I have been logging on and just lurking. Talk about some arguments and long words I can't pronounce.

When they started talking about foot size compared to penis size, I had to lay down on the floor.

Biologists are nuts.

People need to debate and argue..brain exercises. Hunters argue over everything because on the whole we are an ornery bunch. But it holds true in other areas too...Powerboaters/Sailboaters (a friend of mine calls sailboaters rag pickers), flyfishermen/spin fishermen/lure fishermen/bait fishermen (another friend thinks some fly fishermen are the worst elitist), catch and release, catch and keep... The list could go on forever including Indy racing vs Stock car...blah, blah.

For the most part it's all good. People in general have a tendency to want to convince another that their way is better which in effect is saying "be more like me"...Sometimes I think it's an inferiority thing but other times I think it's just human nature.

Once, when I was young, I realized if everyone was "more like me", well, it would be a pretty boring world. The older I get the more I enjoy the diversities in people, the stubborness to give up on their views, to accept another's...I sure do enjoy this site.

Coach- you were once young????

Of course you are right. And if we had these discussions sitting around a fire where we could see each other's faces, there wouldn't even be a conflict.

My goal, most of the time, is to just start a discussion, not an arguement. So many times it just gets sidetracked and the original concept is lost. Sometimes that truly does piss me off because that is not what I wanted to do. When I discuss herd health or herd balance and somebody immediately goes to antlers, that pisses me off because I am not talking about antlers. Antlers are a by-product of herd health, not the other way around. It is almost impossible to have a discussion without it becoming a buck limit discussion. Yes, that pisses me off. Bring up any subject and it becomes KY/TN. yes, that pisses me off.

When I am talking about statewide management and somebody starts talking about managing a 200 acre farm, that pisses me off because they can't read and comprehend. But that all goes away at bedtime.

When I go to bed, it is all over and I start again the next morning.

And yes, that pisses me off, too. I guess it is better to be pissed off than pissed on.

Okay Ruger- Ban me \:\)

Let me assure you, I do not have immunity. If I cross the line, they will bounce me like a basketball. I have been right to the line many times but I have tried to never cross it. But I promise you, if I do, I'm gone.

I am permanently banned from one sight and have been warned twice on another.

And rightly so. But I felt I had to say what I had to say. And if it comes to it, I will do it on this site. A man who straddles a fence, gets a sore crotch. No one will doubt where I stand.

Having said that. I believe this is the best deer hunting site on the internet...bar none. I believe it provides everyone the most lattitude to express their opinion as long as they act as adults. I know it provides the most fact based information. But I assure you, I do not have immunity from anything. I am not a moderator, I have no input and no impact. I am no different from anyone else except I am not always polite ...as BSK is. \:\)

I think that "alliances" are made on forums. People of similar mindsets join forces to get their MISSON accomplished. Most of these people have never grown up. Just like it grade school and on into to high school, they walk tall with backup, but are never the first to jump.....childish and immature, IMO.

Most often times you can see these same people taking the same side in discussions, no matter what the topic.

I have simply disagreed with a thread's message and was automatically deemed a troll or an anarchist very quickly. That tells me that as long as you agree with some people, you can play with them, but as soon as you oppose them, you are a troublemaker......

I have started threads simply to get a good debate started (like bowriter said that he often does) and again have been labeled a troll....

Most times, some people on forums don't have the guts to make the first move but just as soon as one of their LEADERS jumps, well, they follow.....(west side comes to mind..haha)OR if they do jump and none of their cronies come in to join in the fun, they quickly exit...

The first tipoff for me about someones' mindset is "name calling". If they can not debate without name calling, and/or bringing your "morals or values" into the discussion then maybe they need to go get out their pallet and take a nap or have a popsicle. haha

Others never oppose those with power......or those with long standing ties to the forum. This makes debates very boring because you get too many posts like ..."I agree with BSK" or "bowriter is right". Not that they don't deserve the praise but still...boring! It's not really that they KNOW that what these guys posted is TRUE or RIGHT, but they just figure that to agree would be the safiest way to help improve their forum status or maybe make them look abit brighter..... Or many might believe that neither BSK or bowriter could possibly be wrong......not that they ever are wrong mind you.....haha.

I guess the best way to approach a forum is to simply give your opinion and leave it at that. No matter what you post someone will disagree with it and in some cases they will call you out for what you post. I guess they call you out because they think that you don't have a right to your opinion, but they do.

Some will form an opinion of you very quickly based on just a few posts and never change that opinion because they enjoy thinking of you in an unfavorable way....

If someone in the click ever labels you a troll or a troublemaker, you will never live it down and even a very innocent comment will be interpreted as "malicious".

Like in the general forum recently, I commented about a tv show that I didn't care for and I was attacked saying that I never agree with anything and all I ever do is argue.....so something to that effect.....I laughed it off of course. I'm still not sure if this person really hates me or if they were defending the post because someone PROMINENT posted the thread....

Sometimes sucking up really sux.......hahahahahahahaha.

AND ONE LAST THOUGHT.....every day that I spend here, I am more reminded of my youth.....haha. Thanks, I think....

okay, I'm done...and yes DD, I DO HAVE TOO MUCH TIME ON MY HANDS....

HAHA

BH, although your post may be correct or "good" it's possible that you may need to reassess your priorities. Writing a toilet paper Holy Grail Freudian post deciphoring the behavior and mindset of other posters? Isn't there some community volunteer work you do to better spend your time and skills...some soil needed testing somewhere in KY or something?

Man don't that be de trute. Go to a conference sometime. So many times, the answer is so simple. It is right there in front of us. And then we invoke science.

But when we go to bed...if we ever do, or run out of beer, we lay it aside. I haven't been to a conference in several years. But some of the discussions (arguments) were the most educational of all.

I remember a night in Chattanooga... never mind.

I'd rather listen to an old-timer with a ton of hunting experience than a biologist with a ton of facts, charts and data.....

first hand experience gets my vote every time.....plus those big words confuse me sometimes........haha.

BH- very often they are the same person. Don't ever let that fact escape you. That is very important to remember.

I agree.

I have known some people in my life that would have a hard time putting a grammatically correct sentence together, but knew more about the local wildlife than anyone I ever met, even biologists.

Simply saying, if I was given two different pieces of hunting advice, one from a biologist quoting data and the other from the old guy recalling his past experiences, well, I know who I'm listening to more closely......

Not that BOTH pieces of information aren't useful, mind you.

hahahahaha

I like using both of them for information the old guy and the biologist. You can't never stop or keep learning enough about deer!

I would like to say I remember an evening in St Louis, spent with a certain prominant wildlife professor from UT, the director of a certain deer management organization (that has "QDM" in the name), and the Deer Coordinator and soon to be head of Wildlife for a certain state just to our north. But after the 5th or 6th pitcher of beer and the 2nd pitcher of Long Island ice teas, I don't really remember anything. ;\) Other than how bad I felt the next day and how I couldn't get to the meetings until noon!

I've found that the "old timers" will have collected the very best observations of deer behavior over the years, but often jump to the wrong conclusion about why deer were doing what they saw them doing. The biologist is the better judge of "why" but sometimes doesn't have the years of experience in the field.

So each have their advantages.

I agree.

But, I must respectively say that until deer learn to communicate with man, some of the biologist's data is more speculation and theory than anything else....IMO, of course.

Most data is based on observation and studies done over time. IMO, hunters experience is basically the same thing as scientific data, just without the fancy words and printouts...

I do admire both the biologist and the hunter that have reached what I call "admirable status' in their field......
