I have alway wondered what is more important? The memories that you keep or the trophies on the wall? The trophies hang around and get dusty. The memories can last forever.

Call me crazy but every deer I kill is a trophy to me. Don't get me wrong some trophies are bigger, more exciting, harder earned, prettier,...etc. but I consider each harvest a trophy. I may not keep anything but the meat from the animal but they are trophies.

I believe in the deer hunting world, a trophy is relative to where it's harvested. A 125" buck in Kansas is a lot different than the same buck killed in TN. Just the way I look at it.

What is a trophy? Would it be my first deer...? Would be my first buck....? Would it be my biggest buck...? They were all trophies to me but the memories are the things you can't replace...

They're all trophies to me. From the first deer ever to the one I killed in December, they're etched in my memory. I just hope my memory does'nt go.
I know what you mean. Isn't it funny how you can remember each and every one like it was yesterday?

Used to be 120" but, at this point 140" with a bow 150" with a gun killed on public land would be considered a true trophy to me.

P&Y buck (whatever points) or a 130lb dressed doe. My 9yr old son's 5 point is the family trophy. And I have a 140" 11pt on the wall. It's something about your kids first buck that no matter what the size makes it a trophy.

Na, never hunted Ky. I just get out and hunt. I try and concentrate on what I may be doing right or wrong and not so much on everyone else. A few folks on here should give it a go.

a 160" buck would make me VERY happy. It would also be "in my heart" in the form of an "attack" LOL.

My favorite "trophy" was my very first deer kill on October the 10th 1970. It was a 6 point buck and I killed him with a Bear Grizzly recurve bow.
I am still in shock.....and on "cloud nine"! (ha)

A trophy can't be measured in inches....... Its whats in your heart and what makes YOU HAPPY................ Why not ? If it makes a particular person HAPPY in their heart to measure their trophy in inches why would they be any different than the person that shoots a doe or smaller buck and is HAPPY in their heart to have been successful and for the opportunity on their trophy ??? In both instances each hunter is HAPPY and proud of their trophy even though maybe for different reasons. I consider every deer that I have killed to be trophies from my first deer at 10 with a 410 ( 6-point ), to my first deer at 15 with a bow( doe ), to the biggest bucks I have killed that score well over 150 " and all the others in between ! The above statement would be the same as saying that a deer can't be a trophy unless measured in inches which is definately NOT true. Each hunter has their own trophies no matter the gender or total inches of antler. JMO
X2! Trophy bashers are my favorite on this site!

Antlers and/or mature bucks. Nothing else would be considered a trophy to me. I don't feel any sense of accomplishment in killing anything else. (I will shoot does if need be.) But I'm also content with going home empty handed more times than not. Call it what you want, but I've reached the point in my hunting that killing anything less means absolutely nothing to me. The last small buck I shot made me sick at my stomach and left me wishing I could take the shot back. I will never feel regret again when I kill a buck. JMO

In that case, I wouldn't mind eating my mistake.
I didn't! But a doe would have tasted just as well, probably better!

Yodel-- you have reached the point in your hunting life that your desires are to kill a trophy antlered or mature animal. That is great and certainly nothing wrong with that. I think many hunters (including myself) are still not there yet. I have been letting smaller bucks go but I am still tickled with killing a doe with a bow or a nice racked buck with a bow. If I had a rifle or mzzloader in hand I will let more deer walk. My standards go up each year and someday soon I hope I get where you are and hunt mature bucks strictly while still managing with doe kills. It's like in the olympics. Some where disappointed with a silver or bronze cause they expected to get gold. Others where elated to just medal, yet even others where rewarded and achieved their goal of just being in the olympics.
I remember when I first started playing sports. Our team finished second in the city championship one year (baseball). I was happy to get that nice trophy. However the next year I didn't want a 2nd place one, I wanted the big one. Luckily we won it. After that anything less to me was a disappointment. Needless to say I was disappointed alot, but any time we got a 1st place trophy I cherished it alot more than runner-ups or placing.
In hunting, I consider myself in the middle. I will definitely not shoot a 1.5 old buck at all, but a doe w/a bow or even a nice racked buck w/a bow is still a trophy to me. When I kill one and get that sick feeling or wished I would've let it walk then my standard and trophy size will go up.

I'd rather worry about what everybody else is doing than kill a deer anyday! If you're in for a trophy of "your caliber" you may want to give Kentucky a try. You'll have many more opportunities for sure! Look on the bright side you can add a "right" to your list!
