A big difference exists between well-trained coon dogs (that are trained NOT to chase deer), and stray dogs, the neighbors' dogs and poorly trained coon dogs.
Just having coon dogs and coon hunters working through probably isn't much of a problem at all. But once the dogs start chasing deer, that would be a problem.
Exactly. BSK hit the nail on the head. I have this little device that I put on my dog and when he even tries to wind a deer the sparks start to fly. I have seen dogs run deer for hours, days even, in nothing usually more than 1 big circle. I turned loose one night. The dogs ran half way out the side of the ridge. While they were running, a deer almost ran over the top of me. It stopped and made a big loop around me and was gone. The dogs eventually worked there way back to where the deer had came from. They went from opening up fairly hot on this coon track to completely silent for several minutes. The next time I heard them they were about 350 yds in the opposite direction. A dog that has not had any deer breaking training is not a coon dog in my opinion. Now there is the select few that just naturally dont want anything to do with a deer.

I see nothing wrong with coon hunting on your own land or land you have written permission to be on.
I have a BIG problem with dogs or people who do not respect property boundaries.

I will not stand for coon hunters running across my land without permission. I will have them arrested for trespassing.
However, if they ask before-hand, I will give permission quickly and have no problem with them coon hunting outside of deer season. It's simply a matter of respect for my rights as a property owner. Ask and you will receive permission. Don't ask, trespass without permission, and you will be prosecuted.

I grew up coon hunting and I totally agree with your statement about the dogs. Most coon dogs, most of the time will not run deer if they are trained and hunted correctly. Yeah, every once in a while even the best coon dog will jump a deer. Now if we can only get the coyotes to leave the deer alone....LOL.

Or better yet, start hunting and trapping coyotes. A growing body of evidence suggests this could be beneficial to deer management on a site-specific level.

i find it humorous to read statements about how hunters and dogs trampling around in the woods all night WON'T have any effect on the deer and in another thread people talk about hanging stands up MONTHS in advance and try to stay out of the area as to not spook the deer out......they talk about how the least little thing will make a mature deer leave the area, but they see no issue with men and dogs running around out there all night.....
so let me get this right......if I come in an area that was coon hunted just 6 hours before, I should be okay and the deer will be back in there.....
silliest mess I ever heard......
haha
