Good post BH. One thing that I have seen in common when real brutes are killed is the population in the area is usually low or growing.
If it was just about letting them get older before there shot, then a person should be able to see all kinds of Booners running in Cades Cove. I have not seen a deer there that would score over 135 since the early 80's. I think its probrably because high population numbers and less nutritional food to support all the bucks growing giant racks.
Not sucking up, but BSK's explanation of the recent upsurge in rack sizes may be in direct correlation with deer numbers being reduced dramaticlly when EHD hit some areas.

Not to say that it doesn't happen but I haven't hunted anywhere that seems the deer population is too high for the carrying capacity. They all seem to be eating their fill. Maybe we need to thin the timber, crops, and natural browse so that more nutrients are absorbed into the remaining plants and then by the deer eating them, lol.

This is a problem here, there is little timber harvesting going on, every field is in fescue for the most part, and on years with no mast crops the pickings get a little slim by now.
We could use a ton of timbering and letting hay fields revert.

Most all the small game would benefit alot from that too..

Absolutely.
What amazes me, is the amount of $$$ landowners have locked up in mature hardwoods in this part of the state. It makes me wonder if any of them have ever even considered the revenue benefits from doing a select cut or thinning on their timber.

I'd say a vast majority of land owners now days think that a 2x4 is grown at the 84 lumber co...They don't know what they have untill someone knocks on their door and offers to buy it... and with building in the crapper right now there is probably not to many doors being knocked on...just guessin tho..

Just talking at lunch with PMC, I'm getting more bucks on trail cams than does. I think my area is below capacity and sex ratios are very close. Ehd did knock them back quite a bit but the long term outcome will be better IMO.
Same here Rich, I think the ratio is perfect right now around here. I'm just worried about the doe numbers getting high again with the bucks only hunting most of the gun season.
