Fort Campbell had 53% 1.5 year old buck harvest last year with a one buck limit. And this is a place with big deer.Seems like their is more involved than just lowering the limit like some suggest.
Do you think places like FC would produce bigger deer with an 8 point minimum and 2 or 3 buck limit or with the current 1 any buck limit?
I think the higher limit and 8 point or better would end up with more bucks than lower limit.I know antler restrictions can lead to high grading and other problems .

Fort Campbell is a bonus buck, totally different scenario. Ft Campbell has lots of onetime visitors. So the whole, being selective, goes out the window. I wouldnt read to much in to any quota hunt, or WMA hunts where the harvest of a buck doesnt go against your state tage.

Maybe but most people who go to places like Fort Campbell are after big deer.It shows me thier is more needed than just a one buck limit to get people to let small bucks walk.FC has some great bucks and a one buck limit yet the 1.5 year old kill was over 50%.

There is nothing wrong with killing yearling bucks and I believe Fort Campbell is far from over-harvesting them. Why would anyone want to deny someone from shooting what makes them happy, especially when it's not damaging the resource in the least?

I didn't say there was anything wrong with it.I was just asking because it seems every other post on here is about lowering the limits.I was just saying with a one buck limit at a big buck place like the fort people are still shooting smaller bucks. So this tells me lowering the limit will not get the results some people think. My question was what would produce big deer at places like this.A one buck limit or 8 points or better and several buck limit?

Increase the limit to 3 bucks for a couple years, and then you'll see the 1 buck limit makes a huge difference. At present, there's nothing to compare.

also I has another question.how does twra pick certain wmas to be 8 point or better and some others are left alone?I mean if you say why deny someone the chance to kill a yearling buck(which I agree with you on people should shoot what deer they are happy with)then why is Catoosa regulated and denying some the chance at a small buck they would be happy with?I know catoosa was over harvesting 1.5 year old bucks so that might be why but that doesn't explain why Oak Ridge was placed in antler restrictions for several years.
just curious how you guys decide what wma gets managed for antler regs and what does not.

We are trying to provide the full suite of hunting experiences for our hunters. Some WMAs are managed for big bucks while others are not. This way, a hunter can find a piece of public land that may meet his hunting expectations.
