I wonder why Texas has a 2 or 3 buck limit and they don't seem to be having problems killing monsters down there. I just noticed that nobody ever mentions TX....

TX is a totally different ballgame gator. As you can see on that soil map,. there are several areas in rich alfisols in east TX,.. the biggest obstacle they have to overcome is rainfall on those soils. Another factor is TX has a estimated 4 million deer,.. they don't even harvest 1/2 of that,.. allowing many deer to reach a much older age class,.. and TX has antler restrictions in most areas,.. protecting nearly all the youngun's.

True Ky has more Corn, but the SOYBEANS are 400,000 acres higher in TN, which we all should know help the deer more than Corn.
Wheat is double the acres.
that's just acreage. how does the yield per acre compare? that will really show the difference,if any. no different if the farmers no what they are doing my dad can raise crops with the best of them in TN ground i don't care how good a farmer you are. there is no way a tennessee farm can compare to the yields of the midwest.

that's just acreage. how does the yield per acre compare? that will really show the difference,if any. no different if the farmers no what they are doing my dad can raise crops with the best of them in TN ground I dont doubt he can,but what about the dirt in the woods and everywhere else?Thats a big part of the equation,the dirt there grows browse that is more nutritious and more digestiblle,because its better dirt.

And for those Saying anyone can grow deer in the mid-west, do you consider Kansas Mid-West, because most of the state can't make 20 bushel beans or 60 bushel corn

my dad works for a co-op and talks to guys all over the us and yields are not that much different than here it has more to do with the farmer and the different methods of planting that each farmer has and how much he is willing to invest in his crop to get as much out of it as he can
native browse on the other hand could be where the biggest difference is

If you will compare the production per acre, you will find that the kentucky yield per acre is higher than Tennessee. Just because farmers are planting it does not mean they are getting the production another farmer is getting. try this link. http://www.nass.usda.gov/Charts_and_Maps/Crops_County/index.asp#scEveryone can ignore it if they want, but the soils in Kentucky, particularly western Kentucky, are better for crop production, and contain more of the minerals needed (Calcium and Phosphorous)for antler development. More food/acre, and more minerals will produce bigger antlers in a shorter period of time. For the soy beans if you do the calcualtions you will find that kentucky produced 43.4 bushels/acre last year compared to tennessee's 33.3 bushels/acre. That equals 30% greater yield per acre. That yield difference is a direct result of soil differences. Where did you get your numbers, TN averaged 45 bushels last year.
There is an error in my calculations. I used the 2007 acreage reported in the first post with the 2008 yields.

Click on a crop and it gives you a by county breakdown for each state along with a total for the state.
Corn: KY 136 Bushels/Acre, TN 118 Bushels/acre
Soybeans: KY 34 bushels/Acre, Tn 34 bushels/Acre
Wheat (all): KY 69 bushels/Acre, Tn 63 Bushels/Acre
Hay (all): KY 1.95 tons/acre, TN 2.11 tons/acre
it will be intersting to see the 2009 numbers with all the rain we had.
