I dont believe it is the gun season. I say this having hunted both states. KY gets hit harder in the 2.5 week gun season than TN does all year. Maybe that is because it is so good but a lot of your people in TN who hunt opening weekend and a day or so around Thanksgiving would take 5 days off and be in the woods 9 days straight in KY. Its just what people do. Plus KY gets a huge influx of out of state hunters.

Based on what I have seen the only real possibility is the quality of the soil...

my questions would be this:

1) is there ANYTHING in KY. soil that is NOT in Tn. soil

2) does anyone have the numbers on mineral percentages in both soils (averages, I know they vary by area).

You would think that Ky soil would be more rocky than west Tn. soil (not really middle or east Tn.)so what is in there that is better than good old river bottom soils of west Tn. ?

any one have some answers...thanks!

Someone may post a map with soil types. They are generaly related to historic glacial movement with the emphisis on generaly... I know there is one that is referanced quit often but I have not saved it...

Ohio is the same way, short gun season(shotgun) short muzzleloader, bowhunters paradise, and one buck limit. Southern ohio doesnt have the black soil that the north part has and yet it still produces. if may not be the gun season but the buck limit sure sticks out. i may be wrong but ky and oh have increased there gun/muzleloading season the last few years because the set up(gun season length/buck limit) could be better.
anyway my two cents worth

The yields really don't differ that much 10 bushels per acre more in KY, Wheat is only 8 bushels.
Deer don't eat all the crop, the more acres cover more ground for better coverage, effecting more deer.

10 bushels/acre don't sound like much but what is the actual percentage? 10 bushels more than 20 bushels is a 50% increase which is significant. also the richer soils will have crops with higher nutritional value.

Not sure what it is,but it has to do with the glaciers, where they went, alpha soils I believe is right .You could google it I bet.BTW there are 2 pockets of this type of soil in mid and west TN,just not near as much. Its just a better quality of dirt, and In Illinois, its even better.

Saw some guys digging a ditch for some pipe one time In S.Ill.It was black dirt down 6 or 7 feet. Not to many places like that around here, and not a rock in site.
