EXACTLY, the bucks just average bigger per age class in states with superior habitat/resources!

MANY years ago, when I registered as 100, (not 102). I preached AGE, GENETICS, NUTRITION. It was argued then, and I guess will always be argued, that it is all about one or the other of these three factors. The truth is, it is EQUALLY ALL THREE. You MUST have all three (on average) to consistently produce trophy bucks! NOT "mature" bucks, just LARGE antlered bucks.
Kinda like a good broadhead, you MUST have all three...sharp, accurate, and wide to have a really good, consistently producing head.

Several states do not have their first firearms season until after the rut has peaked. Ohio used to be like this (I'm not sure if they still are though).
Does this "save" bucks? Certainly.
Does more "saved" bucks imply there are more older bucks for hunters to harvest? Yes, it implies that, but the proof is in the pudding. How many older bucks are actually being harvested? Does the number of older bucks harvested equate to the number of record-book or "trophy" bucks harvested? The available data--when comparing states--says "No." Just for aeguement sake,I disagree, look at Illinois.Their gun season is outside of the peak rut,and they are racking up B&C bucks like nobodys business,Right? You bet they are racking up B&C bucks, as is OH, KY, IA and many other Midwestern states. But what are the ages of those bucks? How many mature bucks are they killing per year? TN kills a lot of mature bucks per year--far more than KY--but TN isn't filling the record books. What's the difference? Habitat. What I'm getting at is record-book buck entries doesn't equate to the number of mature bucks being killed. It is more a function of habitat quality than the number of mature bucks killed.
dang straight......tennessee has good hunting...but we just dont and never will have the same habitat as some other states....thats what makes us diffrent....and probally a more challening state to hunt....i dont care how big the horns are when i kill them...i just wont a mature buck at least 3.5 years old...i have killed them in a 120"eight point and in cow horn spike...thats all i ask for...MATURE BUCK> they are hard to kill now matter how many points or how much they will score<

to them its all about MONEY........ How does not having a gun season make it,"all about the money"?Wouldnt you sell more gun tags during the rut?
If were spending $5,000 to hunt a buck of a lifetime, had you rather be armed with a bow or gun? I think a few would choose a bow, but most will be packing heat. I don't see money being an issue. I think this scenario could be related to "which came first, the chicken or the egg?". The outfitters are there because the bucks are there by nature, not by the DNR.
