It'll be interesting to see just how the new antler regs affect herd management.

The MS bowhunters association is up in arms about the potential change... they have a fair amount of political clout.
Oh, and btw, we don't have a 'primitive weapon season' anymore, it's a 'single shot season' now... so basically anything single shot .35 cal and up is legal. So you can use your .358 Norma mag in encore platform or even a 50 BMG single shot.
MS realized a year or so ago that what it really needs is more hunters controlling the deer population- and hunters hated fiddling with stupid muzzleloaders. So they're gone.
I wish TN and MS would do away with 'primitive weapon/ single shot' seasons altogether. Their initial intended purpose (to allow extra hunting opportunity with significantly reduced harvest) is both antiquated and detrimental to current herd management strategies.
Let's just call a spade a spade and open up 'primitive weapon' to any stick that goes 'bang'.
tennessee has never had a "primitive" weapon season. it's always been muzzleloader and i hope it remains that way.

The biggest difference is the ability to quickly get off multiple shots.

I can get off a second shot with the encore platform almost as fast as with a bolt gun. The problem is I don't have a 500 yard encore barrel yet.
It's very frustrating for us (wonderful for the gun manufacturers) to continually adapt the firearms seasons...
First, ML's improved in accuracy from the sidehammers to the inlines. Next came shotgun primer ignition systems, then smokeless ML's. Then we went to rolling block style rifles in primitive cartridges (ie 45-70). ML sales fell through the floor as everyone bought H&R rifles. Then the encores were legalized in 45-70's. Now this past year, all calibers greater than .35 became legal.
So, realistically, one could get a 358 Norma Mag and have a legitimate 500 yard 'primitive weapon' in MS. What's the point anymore?
Out West, ML's serve the purpose they were intended... additional hunting opportunity with greatly reduced harvest. Of course, most states don't allow scopes. Many don't allow inlines. Others don't even allow saboted bullets.
But in TN, the ML kill approaches the regular rifle kill. If the purpose of TN's deer management is to allow freedom of choice in hunting as long as the resource isn't harmed, then why not allow additional freedom during ML season? Why not let those who want to hunt with a rifle use it. If you like a ML, you can still hunt with it. I wouldn't want ML's to be made illegal.

Proposed changes to season structure were killed in committee and never made it to the floor, despite the MDWFP fully supporting the proposed legislation changes.
As I said before, the MS bowhunters association has a TON of political clout in this state.
