Interesting.

Boy, I would hate having dog hunting before non-dog hunting.

It's basically already that way. After archery season, we have about 11 days of dog hunting, then 2wks of primitive weapon, then 3 days of non-dog rifle, about a month of dog hunting again, and end up with about 11 days of prim. weapon.

Those first 11 days of dog hunting really screw things up imo.

The main changes are the first 19 days of November being opened up to primitive weapon and finishing the season with gun rather than primitive weapon, (except for zone 2).

and doing away with the mid season 2 wk primitive weapon section, (this is prime rut period for my area and doesn't bother me at all!).

I was just wondering, I know in some other states they let you practice running your dogs during archery season? If thats the case, then it really don't matter which one comes first.

Heres some of the hunting dates for the NW zone of FL... You can run dogs all during rifle season...

Archery Oct. 17 - Nov. 15

Deer-dog training Oct. 31 - Nov. 19

Crossbow Nov. 30 - Dec. 6

Muzzleloading gun Nov. 20-22

General gun Nov. 26-29 Dec.

Antlerless deer Dec. 19-25

I'm sure MS would love this schedule, \:D

The MS bowhunters association is up in arms about the potential change... they have a fair amount of political clout.

Oh, and btw, we don't have a 'primitive weapon season' anymore, it's a 'single shot season' now... so basically anything single shot .35 cal and up is legal. So you can use your .358 Norma mag in encore platform or even a 50 BMG single shot.

MS realized a year or so ago that what it really needs is more hunters controlling the deer population- and hunters hated fiddling with stupid muzzleloaders. So they're gone.

I wish TN and MS would do away with 'primitive weapon/ single shot' seasons altogether. Their initial intended purpose (to allow extra hunting opportunity with significantly reduced harvest) is both antiquated and detrimental to current herd management strategies.

Let's just call a spade a spade and open up 'primitive weapon' to any stick that goes 'bang'.
