That is sad but true...

If some one would do that, it would not make a difference to them if the limit was 2 or 20.

Football...
The first year's change was actually down to 2 bucks. Going from 11 down to 2 was better than an 80% reduction in allowable bucks. When it bounced back up to 3 it was still almost a 75% reduction. 75-80% of 11 results in many more bucks not targeted than 33% of 3 (3/4 bucks allowed to walk versus 1/3 now). If you're just looking at the math side of the equation that's a huge difference although I suspect there weren't many limiting out with the 11 buck limit. I don't have any idea what the average buck take was per hunter back then but figuring alot less than 11 the number of bucks "allowed" to walk now figures to be less than what the above numbers would suggest. Still, those numbers would be well on the + side of the equation. At the same time you can factor in an unknown number of bucks allowed to walk simply by virtue of the reduction in the limits making hunters a little more selective, especially earlier in the season. I don't suggest that going from a 3 buck down to a 2 buck limit wouldn't pardon a few from the meat pole but I don't think those numbers would reflect much of an overall change statewide.

BGG...I agree with you to a point. I do think we were beginning to see a better buck age structure in our herds that had nothing to do with the reduction in limits but rather a change in the philosophy many hunters were adopting. However, I think that reduction in limits not only made a huge difference in the number of bucks allowed to walk but also in the "mindset" of those hunters watching them walk off as opposed to previously squeezing the trigger. Independant from each other, I don't think we'd have seen the difference we do now for years to come.

I have to disagree.......

Many of us here work hard all year to get to go hunting. Many of us don't have the opportunity to go as much as others. Many more plan vacation time around the season......

With that being said, we have all killed deer that we thought may indeed be a bit bigger than they turned out to be. Knowing that your season is over without a wall hanger simply because you misjudged a deer can be hard to swallow. Losing a buck between the woods and the house has been done more times because it was the last tag and not because out of meanness.
