In Tn. a 130 is a really nice deer, still well above average.Personally,I always thought a 140 would be a true trophy to me here in our home state.I can count on one hand people I know that have taken 140"s.But for me,I"ve really always thought that it was in the eyes of the beholder.Thats one reason deer hunting is so great.I see guys that have a basket racked six, that are thrilled, and get it mounted, and then others want a 160 or better.I have a friend who has a trophy room thats unbelieveable,He"s been to Africa twice, most species of bear, sheep, deer, you name it,but He and I where talking the other nite, and he told me that once he's gone, they wont mean anything to anyone.I guess thats true.My mounts are all special, bookmarks for many great memories, and I hope I get to add a few more.Good day.
Good post.

The hunter himself, needs to make that call!
Myself, 127" buck is my best to date, I don't shoot that many 120" deer to let them pass. Now with that said, when and if that day comes, then I will decide to go 130 or bigger.
I have hunted when we could kill 13 bucks,if it had horns it was down, until the present day 3 buck limit. My change from smaller bucks to good 2 1/2 year olds was a step closer, and now a good 3 1/2 year old or older is what I like to hunt now.
Tennessee, is making progress on good bucks, hey we have the best situation here, our choice to pick and choose!

Good post. Goes to show you that everyone has their own thoughts on what a trophy is.
My 9 yr old taking his first deer (5 pointer) with a MZ is his trophy.
My 7 yr old taking his first der (doe) with a shotgun is his trophy.
You will never forget your first deer. To them that is their trophy because it will stick with them their entire life.
To me a bow kill is a trophy. If you put your time in and harvest an animal you have won the game you play with nature. To me there is no greater trophy.

Most of the trophies that you listed are TEAM trophies. Most are displayed in a TEAM facility. And there are players and coaches on these teams that never play but get to cplaim the trophy , just the same. Only the Heisman has anything to do with individual accomplishments and even the Heisman is somewhat tainted because it is an award that is voted on and not actually WON on the field of play. I put little stock in the Heisman. Harvesting a 130 inch buck is more of an individual accomplishment unless you take the deer on a "deer farm" or a guided hunt where someone takes you out to a stand and tells you to sit there and just wait....then it's something anyone can do if they can shoot. What makes a 130 inch buck special is when you work for it, do it the right way, and it's the first 130 incher that you harvest. If 130s became the norm, then 150s would be special..... BH I think some of you are missing the point of this thread. I wanted to show that a true trophy is something that you work for and is not readily attainable by any one that walks into the woods. If there was a 130 or 140 buck behind every tree(I know this is not possible) what would make killing one special?
Actually...i did understand your post and I will follow up with these statements.....
I was fortunate enough to grow up during the time when I still remember black and white TV (with three channels), land line rotary phones and LPs. I knew people that had "party lines" and no indoor plumbing......I say "fortunate" because I know what it's like to live without some thing that today's kids see as "everyday" and somewhat boring......
I know what it's like to NOT see deer and have a one buck limit and no doe tags....
I know what it's like to mount a 65 inch 7 pointer because it was a BUCK!
Now, I know what it's like to kill multiple deer over 120 inches and to even fail to get the job done not once, but twice and watch a true GIANT fade away into the trees as I stood there watching helplessly.
I know what you're saying about 130s being the norm , but just with anything else.....once the prize is obtained , the prize winner wants more and more....
Knowing what it's like to not have things makes having them even that much more special. Killing a 120/130 inch deer back in the 70s would have been huge around here. It was done, but with far less the regularity that it is now. These days, a 120 inch deer is a NICE deer, but back then it would have spoiled in the back of someone's truck.
A simple statement that I find so true in life is this.....
Even the rich get bored, they just get bored with more expensive things.
I guess that having a 130 behind every tree would be great until the bar was set higher and then we would all be passing on the 130s. That would be a great day, IMO...

Nice read BH. The thing I find interesting about how things "used to be" compared to now is that the deer have obviously been getting more abundant as well as larger racked.
That all seems to go AGAINST all those who say that TN isn't making headway in the way of "larger" racked deer when indeed time has shown TN has indeed done just that.

Hey Duck, good points. We find it easier to find fault than praise. We have come along way. To me it is getting better at least in the NE part of the state...
