I thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent afield even though I saw very few deer & only harvested one beast. While hunting Catoosa I saw several 4 & 6 pointers. Never could get a doe within range but the bucks that didn't meet the restrictions hung around forever.
I have a plan for next season. The heavy rain in October flooded the creeks and kept me out of several of my best spots.

i think it is the hunters fault but for example the guys next door to me a few years back ruined a wonderful thing that i had going by shooting everything that moved and i couldn't prove it but i know they did alot of illegal things and for a couple of years it was dang near impossible for me to harvest a mature deer there but i was able to hunt some other places during that time and still get my bucks but now they do not hunt there anymore and it is getting back to what it used to be
i love TN hunting and will continue to hunt no matter what but wish we could put laws in affect that would protect most of the 1.5 yo and if we don't fine i will just have to move around like i did a few years ago from time to time to get the job done if i wind up with neighbors like that again

OK...If I have to point a finger and blame and indiviual or group...it would be the slob hunters that tresspass and tear up a farmers land...Saying that in a serious yet sarcastic way.

I don't "blame" anyone or anything. However, "contributing factors" cerrtainly exist for my lack of success last year. First and foremost is my inability to figure out how mature bucks were using my hunting area during daylight, as well as my choice of which stand to hunt which day. The second biggest contributing factor was the hot weather that occured right during our normal peak of the rut. Trail-cameras showed considerable "chasing" at night during this period, but virtually nothing during daylight.

That's sort of a loaded question. In part, it depends on where you hunt and how much land you have to hunt. For instance, if you hunt a very small parcel of land surrounded by areas where every deer seen is shot your lack of success may very well be the result of others. If you're fortunate enough to have access to a large parcel of land and especially if it's in prime territory your success may be more the results of your own actions or lack of. Let's deal with the latter. First of all define success. A hunter is there to shoot a deer. He has to see them first. In many cases just seeing them is enough to dictate success. If success is defined as actually making a kill then I've spent most of my last 5 years hunting unsuccessful although I've seen deer on most outings and had the opportunity to make a kill most of those trips. I chose not to. Is just seeing a buck the difference in definition or does it include the opportunity to kill him as well? How about if you have something like a club imposed size limit. Does seeing and having the opportunity to kill bucks that don't measure up qualify as successful or do you have to see one that meets the minimum? What if you pass on those that meet club minimums but not your own personal standards? It's all in how each hunter defines success.
Personally, I've passed on every buck I've seen the last 5 years...and I've seen quite a few. A bunch have been over our club minimum and in retospect there were a couple of those I probably should have taken. I've also seen a few that given the opportunity for a clear shot I would have taken in a heartbeat. I suppose those are the ones I keep holding out for. With the exception of this past hunting season I blame no one but myself for not bringing home the buck I'm after. I feel I did things right last year, hunted great spots, and hunted hard. Not only didn't I see the type buck I wanted, I saw very few bucks or deer at all for the amount of time I hunted compared to year's past. I saw 65 bucks total (5 of which exceeded our club minimum), 70 does, 18 fawns, and 12 unknowns for an average sighting of .83 deer/hour. Compared to years past, I consider that unsuccessful even though I didn't make any buck kills on those previous years either. I don't know nor can I begin to explain what happened last year but the deer left sign everywhere but were just not showing themselves during daylight. On average, many of the other hunters there had the same type of year. Hopefully, that won't carry into next season.
Successful? I'd say I have been. I live in a country where I can hunt. I hunt in an area that holds alot of deer and some good ones. I'm healthy enough to be able to go. I enjoy the sights and sounds and smells from sunrise to sunset throughout the different seasons. I'm still thrilled to see deer doing their thing in my presence and I still enjoy matching wits with an animal that has captured my imagination and held it captive for some 36 years and counting. Whose to blame? I don't know? If you see them though be sure to tell them I send my thanks.
