Man have we had a snowy winter this year in Tennessee or what? I live in Hamilton county and if this snow that's falling right now sticks and turns everything white this will be our 5th this year! That's unheard of here, we get lucky if it snows once in 5 years! As I sit in my work truck watching it snow here in Chattanooga, I began thinking about the deer here and how this snow affects them. What do you guys think about all this snow and how it will affect the deer?

As for us here in NE Tn., I can't believe the number of deer sighting of big healthy deer seen this winter. We have had a white ground since the beginning of Jan. I guess with the white ground your able to pick deer out easier than normal, which means more deer sightings. I also think with the cold weather they have to feed and move more as well. I still can't get over the size of the deer we are seeing...Looking good...

I guess it makes it harder for them to get to food sources, but I dont think it has too much of an effect on them overall, sure makes for some great scouting conditions though.

Deer and snow....In all the years I've hunted I haven't had the opportunity to hunt in snow but a couple of times. Once I was camped with a couple of hunting days left and the snow started falling heavy. In a matter of a few hours we had 6 inches on the ground. You could see a sparrow flitter 200 yards away easy. I figured that would be great for sighting deer. I never saw one. I've never seen one hunting within 3 or 4 days after a snow either. Since we're not used to the snow around here (the deer either) do you think the deer realize that their movements are easily detected and they reduce moving during daylight? I was hunting areas that I normally see deer even during hunting season.

Was wondering about the skeeter thing, when you see a hunting show from Canada or Alaska, they are covered in bugs.

I don't think it will have any affect on the deer.

All this snow?We have gotten a few snows but they are all a few inches and are gone in a few days.It will not bother the deer at all.If it stayed for weeks and was 8" or more then that would be different. The deer would have a hard time feeding .

I wish we could always get about what we've had in the past few weeks all the time during the season. I went out yesterday to do a little predator hunting and you could see 200 yards through the woods. Really showed me what I was probably missing before.

we had a 6-8 inch snowfall on a trip to hickman county years ago. the deer disappeared. in 3 days, i not only didn't see a deer, i never found the first deer TRACK!!!

They hole up in cedar or honeysuckle thickets for a day or two, or three or four, if they have to.

I was at Fort Campbell several years ago in late December and it began to snow. Deer came out of the woodwork for a couple hours until the ground was covered and then we didn't see anything for two days.

It might make them a little colder and the ground a little more slippery to walk on.... Never wondered that since deer have fur...

Thats the way it has always been for me too. Snow = No deer, except this past year. Seen several deer with snow on the ground and finally killed a deer in the snow on the last day of the season. Idk why, but ive always wanted to blood trail one in the snow, so I can scratch that off the list now.

I dont' think it has much effect on them. Not the small amounts we get here in TN.
