#2-Florida is and always has been one of the leading cattle states. Have no idea where you are getting your information. Just as Ohio is one of the leading states for raising quarter horses, Florida is I believe the third largest state for cattle. I could be wrong...if so I am wrong.
Yep you are wrong. One source is the cattle network. There are others out there with similar numbers. I would like to see anything that shows the year Florida was even in top 10. I am sure it will be from a long time ago. These numbers are in millions of head. Texas 13.6 Nebraska 6.35 Kansas 6.3 Oklahoma 5.4 California 5.25 Missouri 4.25 Iowa 3.95 South Dakota 3.7 Wisconsin 3.35 Colorado 2.6 Montana 2.6 Minnesota 2.4 Kentucky 2.3 Idaho 2.11 Tennessee 1.98 Arkansas 1.81 North Dakota 1.76 Florida 1.7 I do not see any reason to list the rest of the 50 states.

Understood, If I do my own survey it may be biased to you, because I will do it in a dog running state, and simply based on those that know of how cows hounds get along and have seen it on a weekly basis, our surveys will be different. If you do a survey in a different state you will not get the numbers for farmers in this state and that is what I am saying. Farmers here will not accept it like states that have always had it.
I too am not completely ignorant about cattle, I did ASSUME that we were talking primarily cow/calf operations and not so much grow out. My bad. I was raised around cows and dairies and decided to get a degree in livestock science, but i'm sure if your like a lot cattle farmers9and I'm not saying you are), you think that "all that book learnin dont mean nothin", but even so, I admire anyone in this day and age that can bring in enough income from cattle to make it last and keep the corporate guys out of it. If you were raised dairies then you know how easy it is for a milk cow to go off her milk. We just sold out of the dairy business last year. Our operation is now a combination feed lot and cow/calf farm along with row crop. Glad you have a degree in livestock science. Education is very important in today's farming operations. I do not see today's farmer looking down on book learnin. It is sad that the ones you know have given you that impression. Our farm is a family farm with each one of us having an education in a different field so we can each do our on part without crossing each other to often.

Can you park on roads and sit in your vehicle while the dogs run.......?
Do you ever shoot at deer near these roads where traffic might be an issue?
How many dogs do you usually use at one time?
Do dogs ever catch wounded deer and hem them up?
also, when i think about deer hunting, I think about sitting quietly in the woods and really enjoying the peacefulness of the whole experience.......for that reason, I don't think I would go for this.
not bashing it, just wouldn't do it myself....
BH In certain counties of NC it is legal to shoot from the side of the road. You will see guys standing on top their dog boxes parked on the side of the road. They are not there to shoot the deer crossing the highway, they are mainly there to keep the deer from crossing the roads. I've seen them on Major highways, but down there, its so flat, you can see for miles. # of dogs? I've seen anywhere from 6 to 60 turned out, but most will not be turned out in one spot. Figure if you have a square block, a lot of times, they will turn out a pack in each corner of the block. Yes dogs will catch and bay wounded deer on occasion, but its better the dogs finding them than no recovery. You like peacefullness and quite, and to me peacefullness is a distant pack of deer hounds at sunrise or sunset, just something about it, Like i said earlier, some would enjoy more than others, and you have every right to feel the way you do we tried to time the shots inbetween the autos passing by, didnt mind much if was still hunters or anti hunters that got shot, just wanted to make sure we didnt shoot our buddies

DOG-HUNTING IN THE DEEP SOUTH Texas, allowed dog-hunting until 1990, when it was banned due to a flood of complaints from landowners and non-hunters. Incidentally, Texas now has an estimated 4 million whitetails, which is the largest population in any individual state or Canadian province. I'm not really sure why that put in there but what they are trying to say is 110% false. Everyone who ever hunted with dogs (I grew up doing it) knows that you can kill more deer by still or stalk hunting. We were terrible at lowering the population. Every club I've ever been in or been a guest at killed very few with the hounds. At least compared to their harvest by other methods. The one thing I can tell you, dog hunters are not the outlaw stereotype you hear about. Yes, there are plenty of those also but then again, I could point out plenty of baiters and road hunters that never dog hunted. Outlaw is an outlaw. Every dog club I ever visited or was a member of were the most friendly folks you would ever have the pleasure of hunting with. They all shared the meat and congratulated each other on the kill. There was absolutely no jealousy or arguing among members. Ok, I lied. We did argu where to turn the dogs loose from time to time. That is the one thing I miss. The social and jealous free atmosphere.
I just posted an article I found on the web.... but I do agree with your points... I also miss the social atmosphere and watching guys tear up brand new trucks....

BH Well,of course that is how you think of deer hunting, only way you have evr done it,I guess. But,if you were living in the coastal region of SC,like I was,and never even knew people sat in trees with rifles, until you had been hunting for about 10 years, you may have had a different opinion.
But whatever, most people are gonna think their way is best, never gonna get people to understand other ways, when its not commoun to their areas. Most people dont like the Texas style hunting, never done it myself, but,if thats where you grew up,well,I can imagine that being the norm, and people would like it.
I grew up dog hunting, loved it,never had more fun and crazy times than that. But I also enjoy just waiting on them to walk by me ,they are really easy to kill standing still.
