I am the only deer hunter in my family. Some family members did hunt other things, mind you.
My father never deer hunted. My brother never did either. None of my first cousins nor their parents (my aunts or uncles)have ever deer hunted, to my knowledge.
I do have a brother-in-law that has deer hunted and killed one every nice buck way back in the day. He's since slowed down quite a bit and since my sister keeps him pretty much chained down, well you know the rest of that story.
My wife's father used to deer hunt in Pennsylvania, but neither of his son's hunt at all...
I guess you could say that if the world went to H*ll and we needed to fend for ourselves for meat, then everyone would come see me ......haha.
Did anyone else come from such meager "deer hunting" roots or did most of you grow up in a "deer hunting" family?
Discuss if you want.....

Yep, my brother hunted when he was younger. Other than that its just me. Never had anybody take me hunting when I was younger. My family was all about fishing. We went everyday after we got out of the fields.

I'm the first and only in my immediate family. I did get my dad to go a few times before he passed....he had at one point been a turkey hunter 30 years ago before moving on to other interests. However I have gotten a bunch of my cousins interested in hunting.

I am the only hunter period in my family. Works well, the thousands of acres my family owns in Miss is hunted by me, and only me because of their lack of hunting desire. Fine with me

My dad had 2-brothers, neither of them hunted but he did. I have 2-brothers, neither of them hunt but I do. I have 2-sons..one hunts, one does not. We all enjoy fishing.

Not the same problem here... My Dad grew up hunting and still runs coon dogs every week. My sister deer hunts and my brother-in-law runs a big hunting club down in N. FL. I have to say I was lucky to have a dad, that showed me the ropes...

No one in my family hunted or fished. My sister is an anti-hunter but she is not a cloaca about it. When I was about nine, a family friend, not realted decided I need to learn about the swamps and bayous. He became Uncle Lloyd and soon thereafter, I added Uncle Lester and Uncle Alphus. No blood kin at all. But still family. Uncle Lester is still alive and 74. We fish together a few times each year.
My son fishes and will shoot a dove now and then. My daughter will eat deer meat but is an anti-hunter. Go figure.

I am in the same boat you are BH, except I for my two biggest inspirations in hunting.....one of my mom's brothers and their uncle Mike.
I had little to no contact with hunting growing up other than the occasional story of Uncle Mike. I can't explain my passion for it, but it burns strong.
I had the honor and priveledge to hunt with my great Uncle Mike for 24 yrs before he passed on, my mom's brother has all but let his torch go out when it comes to hunting these days.
I am fortunate enough to have a son who is all fired up about the outdoors and anything to do with hunting and fishing. He will do well..................

I am the only hunter in my immediate family. My dad didn't hunt, and my brothers don't hunt...but they are really into flyfishing. My papaw hunted when he was younger. Some of my dad's uncles hunted in their younger years, but I don't really know any of them.
My wife's family got me into hunting.

It must have been about 1975 or so, when a neighbor of mine originally from Alabama but then living in Tennessee, invited me to go deer hunting on Flat Top Mountain, Tennessee. I had become an accomplished small game hunter and a pretty good wing shooter by that ripe old age of 16. I had never deer hunted and knew NOTHING about center-fire rifles.
I borrowed a 308 from a neighbor who told me the firing pin was worn and I would be lucky to get a shot out of about every three trigger pulls. GREEN was not even close to how inexperienced I was. And NOBODY in my family knew a thing about big game hunting. Heck, we NEVER even saw any deer around here. Not even from the road. Not even in the summer. Not even riding dirt bikes over miles of trails. Not even a track!!!
In fact, I found my first few deer hunting experiences so dis-couraging that I all but quit a couple years later.
Then, in 1981, I married and moved into a duplex. My neighbor, who rarely did anything but come home from his mechanic job and pop a six pack, suddenly and VERY oddly (for him) started shooting a bow in the evenings out behind our duplex.
I let curiosity get the best of me one day and just had to ask. WHY was he shooting that bow so much? This is when I first EVER heard of a bow season and a place called AEDC, not too far from my Chattanooga home.
A trip to a pawn shop for a .22 LR / bow swap and I was shooting in the back yard right beside him. Back then, it was EASY to get a vacancy permit at AEDC for a bow hunt.
And DEER galore!!
This was in 1981 and the rest is history!!!
(and I still don't know much about rifles)

My grandfather (Mom's side) and my dad were best friends and hunted deer when there weren't many deer to hunt. They got me started hunting small game when I was barely big enough to carry a gun. When my grandfather died, my father quit hunting, but they had already sowed the seed. When I decided to start deer hunting my dad would take me once a year. When I got into high school i started deer hunting more with friends. My daughter is hooked on deer hunting, and hopefully she will pass the tradition on to her children one day. no one else in the family other than my bro-in-law hunts, but they are not anti-hunting.

BH, I had my dad and grand dad teach me in my younger years, small game squirrels was gran dads love, man he flat out loved to hunt them ole shakey tails, dad also. We were a 3-som,they spent time with me, and then dad started deer hunting and I just had to get into that too, and needless to say it has been my favorite for a long time now.
You caught it,or you hunted it, you ate it! When times was ruff, they trapped to put food on the table!
I will say this, a family tradition, no, just a way of life that I was very fortune enuff to be around, fishing, trapping, and hunting, man what a lonely life it would be without it!

When I was very young my uncle hunted quail, squirrel, and rabbit. That's what got me started. Shortly after I started hunting he quit all together but I kept after it. I lived to hunt. I'd trade the locals much of the game I took for just enough shells to hunt again. Once I grew up I was mainly a rabbit hunter and always had some of the best dogs around. I tired of squirrel hunting and the quail population dropped to the point of there being no use to fool with having dogs. I had a cousin by marriage that deer hunted in Ms. I finally tried it, killed a nice 8 pointer right off the bat, and I was hooked. I spent so much of my time in the deer woods that it didn't justify owning my hounds any more so I finally sold out and stricly deer hunted. Eventually I added in turkey hunting. I love that but didn't always have a place to hunt so that just sort of fizzled out. For the next 30 years I pretty much hunted solo. Then I got into deer clubs and started teaming up with a few members but I still hunt alone much of the time. For a while the wife got interested but that didn't last long. My kids have never been interested but one of my stepkids hunts once in a while.

Nobody in my family deer hunted dad hunted birds when he was younger but not by the time I came around. I remember buying deer hunting mags before I even hunted probably age 11 or so. My family just laughed and said I wouldn't kill any deer. Killed my first at 16 been hooked ever since. I don,t watch or follow sports if it wasn't for deer hunting don't know what hobby I would have. think about it all year long just love the sport.

My father had me in the woods probably from the time I could walk. I would go sit with him holding my bb gun, ready to "get me one". All of my family hunts on both parents side but the wife's family doesn't at all. They think it's nuts to sit in a tree or a duck blind at 20 degrees. My fathers passion is bass fishing though and he will fish year round which I think is nuts in January

yep same here. I'm the only one in the family that deer hunts. My father's only professed hunting experience was riding on the hood of a 55 Chevy at night through orange groves with a 22rifle waiting for rabbits to run in front of the headlights. I've heard him tell it a thousand times. After demonstrating some talent around a bird feeder, I was taken in by a next door neighbor as an apprentice at age 14 to be his doe assassin. My rabbit huntin was the same as a kid, only it was a 70 model station wagon.I'll never forget the first time I hunted with beagles.Never knew there was another way to hunt rabbits.lol
