I was looking back through all the threads recently and something stood out to me. There are more and more threads posted about baiting, limits and even "tactics" and the ethical boundaries that may surround some or all of them. I think we are missing out on something here.
If someone asked me to name one thing that i would take out of hunting, if given the chance, I would have to paint my answer with a broad brush and say....technology.
Please allow me to explain.
I began deer hunting during my junior year in high school, 1974. The one thing that I remember most about that time is the simplicity of it all.
I never remember seeing many people out. A pre-hunt trip to the local convenient store was, well, convenient. Today, it's more like midday traffic.
I remember sitting in my stand and never hearing a single wheeler and very few pickups coming by on the nearby gravel road. I'm not sure if wheelers were even out then. I know I didn't have one and none of my friends did either.
I rememeber my pockets being empty and not filled with every gadget and call imaginable. I never took a backpack, but if I did, I'm sure it would have been full of food and not rattling antlers and cans. Everything was just so simple, you never had to worry about forgetting something, simply because you never took anything to the field other than a weapon, techniques you had learned and bright eyed anticipation.
I remember that Haywood County was more of a cotton county then than it is now. Very few grain fields to hunt. Foodplots were non-existent, no one ever heard of salt licks and I had been hunting for quite a few years before I even saw a grunt tube.
I remember when killing a deer was a huge thing.....most every kill found it's way into the local paper regardless of what is was.....it was a deer and that was enough. Deer that made the paper definately had never seen a flashbulb before then.....no game cameras back then and most hunters never saw their kill before they met face to face.....adding quite a bit more excitement to the meeting.
I remember my first deer. I remember bringing it home and not having a clue how to dress it. I remember throwing a rope over an oak limb and hoisting the deer up with a rope tied to the bumper of my car.....I remember my mother standing out there in the rain holding a flashlight as I butchered the poor thing. Not on purpose mind you, but my skinning skills were limited by the obvious lack of experience. It took a couple of days to find someone who would cut the meat up for us.......luckily our chest freezer was pretty empty at the time.
I remember that my mom was not too happy that night and neither was I. Several times, I remember thinking that I might not enjoy being a deer hunter unless I got better at what I had to do AFTER the kill. I remember my mom telling me that was her first and last time helping me..haha. Luckily, I did get better with time and experience.....she appreciated my efforts , as well.
The thing that I remember the most about deer hunting was when lessons were learned. When the light bulb went off in my head and I could actually see that what I was doing was bringing me success.
The reason that I would take all the technology out of deer hunting is simply because of the wonderful journey that I had getting to where I am today. Not that I don't take the opportunity to use technology today, but I believe that if I had all the things that today's kids have at their disposal, I might not have grown to love it quite as much.
I think that if given the chance to start all over and do it the old way or do it like we all do it today...well, I think that would be a very easy decision for me.....
All I would have to do is remember the journey and the memories that came with it....

Good post and definitely has some merit. The world we live in is everchanging and hunting hasnt been left out. I too remember when I didnt even own enough stuff to fill up a fanny pack let alone a backpack. Technology has definitely taken a deep root in hunting for a lot of people, and it too is being used in place of woodsmanship and experience in the field. I think some of it is good and some bad, just like other advancements over the years, some good and some bad.

Very good post...It's funny just how fast we get caught up in advancement. Sometimes we have to stop and take a step back. It use to be a lot simpler...

It would be okay but you have to understand, I am honest with my critiques. Mostly I piss people off.

After being on here for a couple of years, I can take most anything...haha.
Actually, I've sent some stuff to other writers without much input from them.....not sure why.
maybe the stuff was bad or maybe they liked it and didn't want the competition, not sure. haha
Tell me what you think and any advice will be welcome.
thanks
I'll be in touch.....
