let's say that the area that you hunt floods regularly......

It floods to the point that salt blocks placed on the ground are useless and sometimes the water can get over stumps as well, washing away any type of salt you put out.....

What other options would someone have......?

many years ago, a friend of mine took an old burlap "tote sack", filled it with a broken up salt block and tied it into a tree....

As the rain washed the salt out of the sack and onto the ground, the deer began to find it.....

I can't be sure if the deer ever actually licked the tote sack itself, but I do know that the tote sack blocks lasted alot longer than regularly placed out blocks, even where the flood water was not an issue.....And, if the deer will lick the burlap sack , then that might be a great way to provide minerals to deer where water is an issue.....

any thoughts...?

you can fill it with loose salt, no need to use a busted up block.

was somebody on here while back mentioned filling up an old pair of dungarees with road salt and hanging them up in a tree same purpose- don't know if it was a flood prone area, just think he was into the drip method

Yeah......i saw this done back in the early 80's.......I never used salt back then and still don't hunt over it now, but I would like to provide some minerals and extra nutrition to the deer in this particular area and most years it floods....sometimes the water can be measured in feet...!!!

Where would someone buy burlap bags these days?

thanks

BH,

I get mine at the Co-Op here in town. I buy them by the bundle of 20, about 6 to 8 bucks. They don't last all year.

Actually, the photo I posted is of a Bag-R-Buck bag I got for free at some outdoor event. I think that, along with the minerals you get in a mineral block, they added some molasses. My understanding is that it's illegal to hunt over regular molasses, but they have come up with some crystallized version that is legal.

I never hunted over it anyway because, like regular salt licks, deer don't come to them regularly enough once deer season starts to make it a high percentage hunting location.

They do work well, though, and I got hundreds of photos of bucks and does. They seem to come by more after a rain when the bag drips its contents into the ground.

we do that..but we hang it high up in the tree where nothing can chew a hole in it...squirels and birds will put a hole in the bags......we put 20-30lbs of rock salt "ice-cream salt"in it and it last about 6 months to a year....they will dig a hole some times 3-4 foot deep....

a buddy of mine was using rock salt in a pair of tube socks and would tie them to a limb and the deer would dig a huge hole under the sock.

I've had the Bag-R-Buck stuff out for about 2yrs now and the stuff works great, the problem is keeping other critters from chewing holes in it and tearing the thing down.
