I hunt from built stands. I actually don't own any hang-ons or climbers. Most of the time if I'm in a tree its in a stand I built. All of mine have plenty of room and are built for comfort!

Yup, I built them and hunted out of them.

And those who mentioned it are right; many of those old permanent stand locations are in excellent spots. Someone did their homework.

I will let you in on a little secret and tell you right now.....You find some of those that were built a long time ago, THOSE are the places you want to hunt. You find some old stands like that, not much scouting is required. Thats one of the things I look for when scouting new locations. Trust me...those old timers knew what they were doing...And wouldnt waste their money on wood unless it was worth it. Natural crossings ARE natural crossings

You think I'm kidding....

Totally agree.....

Absolutely, less deer back then meant folks really had to know the deer that were around and how they traveled.

remember the forked tree- nail 2 2x4s then nail 2 more crosswise to sit on.
old stands!! yep- found one this season right along a deep woods trail with 3 of the biggest rub tree in the bottom. moving box stand there this spring. huge oak tree.

That is all we hunted out of
We would use railroad spikes for the steps
and cut small saplings for a shooting rail
Those old stands when found can tell you alot
I still like to hunt around them and often wonder
how many deer passed by

That brings back some serious memories! I too have been in more than my share of the old homemade stands, some pretty comfy and some literally death traps! I remember one morning in particular when I was maybe 12 years old, my Dad left me before daylight after he watched me climb into one in Jackson co. This was actually a log laid across the forks in 2 different trees with short boards nailed across the top of it. It was way up there and I loved it until the wind got up and one tree would be going one way and the other tree the opposite. It got so bad I was literally afraid to let go long enough to try and get down. I was never happier to see my Dad coming back down the hill a few hours later!! We had no Cell phones and no Radios, couldnt afford a camper and had spent the night in the loft of a barn, just me and Dad, those were the good ol days. I wouldnt trade those memories for all the money in the world!

I have hunted out of many of them, and Redblood made the most dangerous ones I have been in.

Us old timers had years on hunting under our belts , we hunted tree rats and rabbetts long before there were any Deer to hunt in Tennessee. Time in the woods can never be replaced.

I've got one of those on my place too. No telling how long it's been there.
