Rocks or salt licks are a great way to get an inventory of your bucks in the area, especially mid to late summer.Have any of you guys noticed that if you refresh a lick too close to opening day of bow season, the deer seem to pull off it for a while?Maybe its just me,but I leave mine alone after Aug 1st,and as we all know,be mindful of scent control when checking cams.

i don't worry about scent control. we are constantly in and out refreshing salt and checking cameras.i want them to know i have been there. just like anything else, they get used to you being there.

I'm beginning to believe this is exactly the case. Same as working in food plots. If your scent is in these plots year round, deer seem much less wary of human intrusion during hunting season.

In fact, I wonder if I can't get away with more during hunting season because I'm checking and moving cameras on a weekly basis for 6 months out of the year. Perhaps deer are getting used to my personal scent.

I agree about the scent control. We walked our food plots all the time during plotting, and the season. We would spray off a bit before actually hunting. But you're bound to miss a little bit of human odor. I think the deer get used to it and are a little less frightened at the smell.

As far as scent control on my trophy rock. I plan on having a "backdoor" entrance to get my cam and thats it. If I need to "refresh" my TR then I will be able to throw it from where I put my cam therefore not distrubign their licking post.

Deer can and do get conditioned to many things concerning humans. Mature deer however are much less forgiving, especially during daylight hours!

That's one of the reasons I hang almost all of my stands on teh edge of logging trails. The farm I hunt has people trail riding horses all the time.
