FYI, Bass Pro has the Trophy Rocks at $15.99 now. Usually I saw them at $20 + and never bought one. But the wife let me get one for this upcoming year.
SO...
My question is this.... I see many different set-ups for the Trophy Rock.
How would one reccommend setting up a trophy rock area(s)?
I've heard best way is find out where you want to put a stand up 1st.
Then find a good used trail.
Clear the ground about 4x4' to the dirt and place the trophy rock in the middle.
As far as the cam I know that part actually.
ANYWHO... what you guys think?
Oh, and if I put it out this weekend coming up do you think it will work until the '10 season opens up?

as to where, just pick a spot. they will find it. i purposely started one lick as far from any established trails as i could. there are now 3 trails to it.
it will last longer if you put it on a stump.
i refresh mine about every 3 months. i doubt just 1 rock will last through the spring, much less into deer season.

The only thing I would do that you didn't mention is put the rock on a stump. That way the residue runs down the stump and when they start hitting it they will dig all the way around it. Good luck.

AH... ok makes sense.
So just a small stump maybe a foot off the ground.
Should I clear around the stump to the dirt?

Stumps are good. In the past, we would take a lot of brown sugar and mix with water to make a paste (on the thin side) and pour it down into a stump. Next thing you know, there's no bark on the stump and it's smoother than a baby's rear end, plus they'll dig a hole around the edge.

here's a tip..........to get pics of good deer, place the rock and camera set-up in a thick area.......don't put it out in the open.......deer will feel more comfortable coming to it, even during the day.

I do that too, and it works very well.

Ok, sounds good to me.
This property has never been hunted and the first time we're going out there is this weekend.
Scouting for me starts at the end of the previous season.
I guess some 160 class deer was taken a few years back about a mile from this property. Should have some good pics... hopefully!
Either way I'll make sure and put this thing in the thick thick stuff.
As far as putting a stand near the trophy rock... should I put the stand on a trail leading to rock OR right on top of the rock.
I'm pretty sure (I'll double check) that trophy rocks are not considered "baiting" due to their salt content ALSO there ARE cattle on the property but will not be able to get to this rock.
Any success on hunting a rock and shooting deer off it?
