Let's hear some stories of the best deer hunter that you have personally ever known, and how they influenced you and made you a better deer hunter.
Mine was a friend that I met in the mid to late 60's. He was from New york, and had hunted the Adirondacks. I was 15 years old and he was in his 40's. He was quite a character, but he was always willing to pass along any expertise that you wanted to know about deer hunting.

Mine was a neighbor that I met when I was 12 yrs old, when we moved to N. FL. My dad would put the dogs in the woods and Jim and I were in charge of cutting the dogs off and shooting the deer. My first hunt with Jim he drove down the old dirt road following the dogs. He finally pulled over and told me I better get my gun out of the rack. I told Jim I would wait... A few minutes later Jim mentioned it again, about me getting my gun and I didn't think we would see a deer. A few minutes later a nice 7 point stepped out a few yards from us and Jim knocked it down. At that point I decided Jim knew what he was doing. Jim could listen to the dogs run and know right where they were crossing. Jim also had all kinds of mutts that he trained to run deer.
I can still remeber Jim coming up to the house wanting to borrow the 3 wheeler to drag a deer out from behind his house. I didn't think nothing about it, even if it wasn't deer season. Its hard to believe that was almost 30 yrs ago.

Mine was my deceased uncle. I never knew him to take a bad shot. he didn't kill many deer. But he could have. Every deer he killed, he killed with Winchchester Model 12 shotgun. He didn't own a treestand, never wore camouflage, always smoked a pipe.
But he understood deer and deer movement. He could read deer sign and he knew how to teach a knuckleheaded boy.

Mine was my father in law.
First time I met him the first thing I noticed was a huge buck over the fireplace. I was 18 but knew right then this man could teach me a thing or two about hunting.
He hunted the mountains and always killed bucks when most were lucky to even see one during the whole season. For some reason, he never took does. Didnt believe in it.
He took the time to point out deer trails, bedding and feeding areas, funnels and just generally why deer did what they did.
First time I hunted with him, he made sure I was safe in my tree stand and then peed right under my tree.
3 hours later deer came right in and I told him to relieve himself anytime, it was better than tink 69
Loved to hunt, and yep he used a pre 64 winchester 30 30. In his later years, eyesight failing and not able to walk, he would go and never even load his gun. He just loved to be in the woods.
Treated me as good as my own dad. Boy do I miss him.

My papaw for taking me when I was young. He may have not been the greatest hunter, but he knew the importance of getting out and enjoying the outdoors with all the changes in society that are happening. I'm just thankful everyday that he exposed me to hunting and fishing.

except for magazine articles back in the 70's and 80's, I was self-taught.......
not many people deer hunted around here back in 74" when I started.
trial and error......it does help to be able to remember most every hunt and what you learned about each mistake...
a wonderful journey, IMO

Mine was a friend of the family, hunted exclusively with a recurve through all seasons. He didnt actually hunt all that much, but he could kill mature bucks with the best of them. Which is all he would shoot and this was 25 yrs ago when the hunting here in East TN was tuff, but he always managed to kill good bucks every year. He knew more about the woods and how to get around in them, than he did the deer. I didnt get to go with him very much, but when I did I paid strict attention and learned a great deal. I was on my own for 90% of my initial learning to deer hunt. He used to amaze me at how he could take you anywhere in the woods in total darkness without everusing a flashlight. I used to be amazed by this, but now its the way I hunt as well, flashlights most times just get in the way of the big picture and being able to tell where you are. Only time I ever use one now is on public property when in fear of getting shot by some yahoo before daylight!

This may seem strange to some of you however...my son. I would take him with me when I had to carry him on my back to and from the stand. I was just a plug ham and egger deer hunter but we got one once in awhile.
Today I still hunt with him some 20 years later but now he teaches me, shows me newer updated techniques and things about hunting in general that I never even thought about...so, yep, it's my youngest son...
