I've never been a fan of hang ons, just because they don't seem to safe, they seem flimsy and weak..But im sure its just me,anyway,my main reason Im leary of them,is the cables that hold the platform up..Anybody ever remove the cables and put chains in its place? Im thinking of ordering this stand to put on the 20 acre place I got permission to hunt for bow season, but I think Im gonna replace the small cables with a good heavy chain instead,to give me a peace of mind..Its only $69 for stand and 20ft climbing sticks, can't beat that..And Im not sure of thiefs in the area,I don't wannt put one of my better ladder stands there to leave and yet I don't wanna have to pack my climber in and set it up every time I hunt...Sooooo,is changing the cables with chains a good idea or not?

Really not needed man. They are safe you just have to use them and confidence will build. This was my first year using them and I was like you at first and now I love them.

I think if you will look into it a little more you will find that the aircraft cable they use on the stands has a higher breaking strength than most chain. I wouldn't retrofit.
One thing you can do to add a little stability and more peace of mind (if needed) is to add an additonal rachet strap down near the platform. It will take out some of the "wiggle" and add to your sense of security.

ditto to this. I do this on every one of my lock-on's. It really does make it more sturdy and will make you more comfortable.

cecil - I am a huge fan of lock-ons....AND I'm afraid of heights, if that tells you anything. The reason I like them, is because you can conceal them so well. MUCH easier than a ladder stand. No chains should be required UNLESS you are concerned about theives, which I completely understand.
All you have to do is get 2 heavy duty ratchet straps and put one at the top (near the seat) and one at the bottom (near the base)...the thing wont budge. If your worried about a thief, then yes, put a chain around it. But 2 ratchet straps will do the trick. If your by yourself, put the 20 ft ladder on the tree, climb up and screw in a "screw on step" hang a long rope over the step, tie one end to the seat of the stand, and pull with the other end and pull it up to the desired heighth and tie the rope off, climb up and ratchet away. You cant beat a lock-on

Ditto! Hang ons are my favorite stands for bowhunting!

Thanks guys for the info,Its mainly gonna be for bowhunting so I can set it up close, then when ML and gun opens I can cover the whole field from the ground..I'll probably put a chain around it for theives, but I never use the rachet straps that come with a stand,I always guy rachet straps rated for 1500lbs that really pull the stand to the tree...I'll use 2 of them..LOL Thanks again.

I use hang-ons exclusively, excpet when I use my one ground blind and my one ladder stand.
I have three hang-ons on one place, four on another place and two on another......
I love them.
I always put two extra straps on them.......

Double ditto that guys! Then, as far as the thieves go, I loop a chain around the entire set up and lock it up. At least if they want it bad enough, they'll have to work for it, that's how I see it anyway. Oh, and I love loc-ons, that's all I use anymore, except for one ladder stand that's in a permanent location.
