How many of you guys have hunted out of old wooden stands that were built out of Ply wood and 2'x4's. I can remember as a kid hunting out of these stands built between two pine trees and I never even heard of a safety harness. I wouldn't dare think of it now.

Heres a neat one I found on the web...

It was always a harrowing experience going up it for the first time. Never was quite sure if a step was going to snap or not. LOL

Still use them. Built some platform stands out of pressure treated about 15 years ago. Used metal ties to attach the platform to the tree to allow for tree growth, wind, etc. Used railroad spikes for steps and to support the platform weight, it turned out to be a good design. Cant steal them thats for sure and a good roomy platform is nice for guests or to nap in if you get sleepy. Dont forget the rails. \:\)

We had a lease in Lewis co a long time ago and whoever had hunted the land before us had some stands made out of 55 gal drums. Pretty far up in the trees. Never seen anything like before or after. Snake can attest to it he was there.
They also had some platform stands that I know were 35 to 40 ft up in some huge oaks. I clum up in one once. Never again.

I think that on actually looks pretty good compared to some I have hunted from! One thing was for sure... I never got sleepy in some I hunted in 15 years ago! I was too scared to move quik, let alone doze off!

Talk about time changing... how about the safety harness' we use now in comparison to the one we use to wear (if you wore one at all)

We have some that we built just like that....and some that are there from MANY years ago.

I will let you in on a little secret and tell you right now.....You find some of those that were built a long time ago, THOSE are the places you want to hunt. You find some old stands like that, not much scouting is required. Thats one of the things I look for when scouting new locations. Trust me...those old timers knew what they were doing...And wouldnt waste their money on wood unless it was worth it. Natural crossings ARE natural crossings

You think I'm kidding....

Absolutely, less deer back then meant folks really had to know the deer that were around and how they traveled.

The "good ole days". We would haul in our 2 by 4's for the
platform, and make our steps and rails out of the surrounding
dogwood trees. When I say "hauled in", I mean we carried the
boards my hand sometimes as long as 2 miles. These stands would
often last up to 3 years before they needed repair.

I will admit they were dangerous, but nowdays it seems like you
hear of someone falling all the time from modern climbing stands
and fixed stands.

Yeah I used to hunt out of them. That was all we had or could afford for that matter. I remember going down to the local sawmill and getting scrap wood to make my ladder.

I would use a pallet for the platform.

I hunt from built stands. I actually don't own any hang-ons or climbers. Most of the time if I'm in a tree its in a stand I built. All of mine have plenty of room and are built for comfort!

Yup, I built them and hunted out of them.

And those who mentioned it are right; many of those old permanent stand locations are in excellent spots. Someone did their homework.

That is all we hunted out of
We would use railroad spikes for the steps
and cut small saplings for a shooting rail
Those old stands when found can tell you alot
I still like to hunt around them and often wonder
how many deer passed by

That brings back some serious memories! I too have been in more than my share of the old homemade stands, some pretty comfy and some literally death traps! I remember one morning in particular when I was maybe 12 years old, my Dad left me before daylight after he watched me climb into one in Jackson co. This was actually a log laid across the forks in 2 different trees with short boards nailed across the top of it. It was way up there and I loved it until the wind got up and one tree would be going one way and the other tree the opposite. It got so bad I was literally afraid to let go long enough to try and get down. I was never happier to see my Dad coming back down the hill a few hours later!! We had no Cell phones and no Radios, couldnt afford a camper and had spent the night in the loft of a barn, just me and Dad, those were the good ol days. I wouldnt trade those memories for all the money in the world!

Us old timers had years on hunting under our belts , we hunted tree rats and rabbetts long before there were any Deer to hunt in Tennessee. Time in the woods can never be replaced.

I love building stands, honestly I prefer them over any other kind of stand but they are only good for a few years. But boy do I love them that first year when I know they are new and safe!

That was all we ever. Lots of time we made them out of what we could find in the surrounding woods. No ply wood or two by fours just small trees and limbs woven in and out of the tree limbs. Thank the Lord we never fell thru. The Good Lord looks out dumb people or my brother or I would not be here today.

mrjim43,
I hear you brother. We always used dogwood. It seemed to resist
rot the most. I have climbed some woods made stands years ago,
that looking back, I feel fortunate not to be dead or paralized.

On the left bank of Jones Creek on Center Hill, as you are coming out, is an old wooden stand. It has been there as long as I have have fished that lake...at leat 40 years.

I can catch a fish in front of that stand any time I want to.

If these old stands could tell the story...The property I have has about 20 of these old stands. They told me the old man that owned this property was a deer hunter and I'll say he was. For there is sign around everyone of those old stands and he knew how to read the land. I just wish I could have meet the old man...
