Fl is not even in the top 10. As a matter of fact in 2009 they ranked 18th and was below Tn. No where close to being one of the biggest cattle states in the U.S. Posting false info only hurts your side of the discussion. Second you said they have run dogs down there forever so the cattle are use to them. Go out and survey the cattle farmers in this state and see what they say. I believe many landowners with cattle will stop leasing their land if dogs are used. I have 7 neighbors with cattle and none of them would allow it. As a matter of fact some of them have got donkeys to keep dogs out of their cattle. I have 2 with no cattle and not sure what they would do.
Not knowing history hurts your side of the discussion sir. Florida is the oldest cattle ranching state in the union. Cattle,as well as horses were first brought to Florida before any other state. Dogs have been a part of ranching and hunting in Florida for Centuries. If cattle on particular farms are not "dog broke", it is simply because they have not been raising cattle long enough.

I guess I do not follow what you are saying. How does history have anything to do with what is being talked about. He stated that Florida was one of the BIGGEST not OLDEST, two totally different things. Your statement actually helps prove my point that the livestock in Fl is use to the dogs running deer where here in Tn they are not. Dogs are not a big part of farming here, while most farmers do have dogs they are not out in packs running through the herd.

Again some cows will freak out and a easily stressed cow/calf/bull/steer/heifer is useless and is nothing more than a heap of leather and bones, but any real cattleman in his right mind will reckonize that and have its butt on next load to the sell barn. I've just never seen cows that jumpy in areas where dogging is common (and legal), cause there used to it, and most will not even stand up if there laying down.

Here again nothing was said about rabbit, squirrel or duck dogs. They are few in numbers and only go short distances not the same as I would suspect with deer dogs. I have seen deer here run long distances when being chased. Your last statement "I've just never seen cows that jumpy in areas where dogging is common (and legal), cause there used to it," shows what I am trying to say that here the livestock is not use to the dogs chasing as they are in Florida. That is the point I am trying to make.

As far as referring to what real cattleman in their right mind would do, I am a full time farmer that has cattle as a major source of income. We buy weaned calves then double their weight then sell them as the main partof our cattle operation. We have already shipped over 300 head since Christmas. Florida has never been a part of our buying or selling. At any given time there will be between 600 and 1000 head on our place. I would say I do know just a little bit about cattle and how they react to strange things. I also know most farmers in the area and how they think about things like this. That is why I said go do your own survey to see for yourself. Continue on I might learn something about cattle by the time this is over. lol

For the record we all know this is just a waste of internet space cause it will never happen here in Tn.

I think a few of my post talked about that I was not interested in making it legal in TN. I have not owned a dog in 20 yrs since I left home. Just something new to talk about. A little more interesting than baiting and buck limits.

It is definitely something different \:D I don't think anyone thinks you are trying to get it legalized. Don't worry the baiting and limits threads will keep coming back every month or so. \:D

Understood, If I do my own survey it may be biased to you, because I will do it in a dog running state, and simply based on those that know of how cows hounds get along and have seen it on a weekly basis, our surveys will be different.
I too am not completely ignorant about cattle, I did ASSUME that we were talking primarily cow/calf operations and not so much grow out. My bad. I was raised around cows and dairies and decided to get a degree in livestock science, but i'm sure if your like a lot cattle farmers9and I'm not saying you are), you think that "all that book learnin dont mean nothin", but even so, I admire anyone in this day and age that can bring in enough income from cattle to make it last and keep the corporate guys out of it.

What it comes down to is different states have totally different interpretations of traditions and other hunting practices. Oh and sorry about quote deletions

Pun intended, I got no dogs in this fight.

I never shot a deer out of a truck, (in front of dogs), don't know anyone who did. We took stands in the swamp, usually logs to sit on. Where we hunted, there were no roads. The biggest 8-pt I ever killed (264# field dressed, 145") I shot with three hounds tied to my belt, They promptly jerked me off my feet. I was shooting an L.C. Smith 12 double with ought buckshot. I was deep in the Cocodrie Swamp back before it became a beanfield. That deer is also on my wall. I think I was 13.

#2-Florida is and always has been one of the leading cattle states. Have no idea where you are getting your information. Just as Ohio is one of the leading states for raising quarter horses, Florida is I believe the third largest state for cattle. I could be wrong...if so I am wrong.

I have been out with a buddy from Lake City, FL on a dog hunt. It was fun as heck. I mean these guys drive their hunting trucks into the ground just to kill a spike! It was a blast!

However, the quality of deer does suffer due to that added pressure. I would never want TN to become a dog state. If anyone ever thinks that we bicker on here, you should see the still hunters and dog hunters in these clubs going at it!

Yeap, I grew up and hunted just 70 miles east of Lake City in Palatka, FL. Them ole boy do get mad if they fell you cut them off to get a shot..

Right on man. I have hunted the Rodman bombing range down there. That place is full of so many darn cottonmouths that it is almost scary to walk in the dark down there.

I almost got bit one time down in the pre-dawn darkness. I was walking down an overgrown grassy trail. I only had my headlamp for a light. I was looking more for spiderwebs out in front of me. I just happened to scan the ground at the right time due to the weeds being pushed down due to this joker's girth.

Laying just under my foot was the absolute fattest snake that I'd ever seen in the wild. I was able to avoid my step andback off without being hit but I about sheet my drawers!!!! I was on egg shells anytime I ever hunted down there!

I believe I may have hijacked the thread in the wrong direction. Like I stated earlier, I'm glad Florida still honors the dog huntin tradition.

Never seen anybody shoot them out the truck but I have seen several shoot at deer off their dog boxes. I remember those days setting up on a log, on the edge of the swamp before they let the dogs loose.

I remember on time my dad set me up on an over grown logging road near the edge of the swamp. I heard the dogs jump one up by the swamp so I ran down there with my bow in hand. I watched the deer run right bye me and stop within a few yards of my chair. That was one of those days I should of stayed put and my dad reminded me of that....

I was talking to my buddy down in FL about concerns with running dogs around cattle. We both agreed, we never heard of a problem with hunting dogs interfering with catlle. He asked me, "did we have wimpy cattle in TN?" \:D
