I have hunted with dogs before (years ago), and it is as thrilling as any kind of hunting. Listening to the dogs getting closer and closer is an adrenaline rush for sure. Oh yeah, better take buckshot too. ;\)

It may be exciting to hear the dogs running your way and waiting to get sight of the deer they're running but I'd opt out. For one, what good does it do to scout sign and set up if dogs are pushing the deer around and out of their normal patterns? Secondly, and most importantly, when I hunted states that allowed dogs most leases were 1000's of acres and they didn't want you hunting there even if you were a deer sign/stand hunter. They wanted it all. There were also quite a few deer crippled with buckshot.

I think that it is something that would have to be seperated from the general hunting season...either add on a week at the end of the season or take the last week and allow hound hunting. If done right (dont know how to do that), there may be a benefit for all hunters.

Now the question I have for the folks that have hunted w/ hounds.
What usually happens when I am sitting in my deer stand and hounds run a deer in front of me and I shoot it? the hounds are not mine? Is that acceptable in the community or does it create allot of bad blood?

The places I did it, it was never an issue. We were running dogs on parcels of land which were 3000 acres+, the place I did it the most was 11,000+ acres, and there wasn't anyone else hunting the property.

most of the states that still allow it have some thick terrain,i would like to try it in a state where its legal but wouldn't like to see us start it,also the trespass issue would cause more problems now that farms have been cut up into small segments, dogs & deer will run for miles in a big circle, too many folks impacted to keep it ethical/legal here imo,mike243

I wouldn't mind trying it.

The people who are against the hunting with dogs are the neighboring land owners....saying that the dogs obviously don't know where the boundaries are. A lot of litigation in the courts right now in several states.

You are right mike, the land in most of the dog states is still unbroken enough to allow it, and I think GA has a minimum acreage requirement. It would be a disaster here, and end in violence I am afraid.

When guys are running dogs they don't scout the area or set up in stands. When dogs run deer, the deer will run and cross in the same areas a lot of times. The dog hunters will know these patterns and can tell by the direction the dogs are running where the deer is going to cross. The hunters want to be mobile and will have cb radios so they can communicate and cut the deer/dogs off. This is more of a social sport with hunters that like to hear their dogs run. Killing the deer is secondary for most of these hunters. This is no different than fox hunters that run their dogs at night down in FL. They don't even carry a weaopn. They just let their dogs run all night and half the time, their dogs are running deer. I have never heard of any clubs that didn't want stand hunters in the areas where they run dogs.

P.S. If you have never tried it or don't understand it. Then it would be hard to judge or say you wouldn't like it. I had a buddy that once thought the same thing and now he owns several dogs and runs deer with them. I once told my roomate in college that golf was for wimps and I would never play. My father-in-law introduced me to golf a year later and I chased that little ball around for a lot of years. I learned something from this, I shouldn't judge somethimg if I have never tried it.

I've used dogs on large tracts of land and growing up rabbit hunting, I had no problem with it and wouldn't mind if Tennessee did it. Just need to leagalize buckshot while doing it. lol.

Ain't nothin like huntin with dogs. Deeply rooted tradition in the south. Born and raised in Florida, a state that still honors that tradition.
