How many times have you been in your tree stand and the deer did not know you were there? If they dont know you are there and there is nothing else to spook them you have until they are done feeding or move off.

The guys on TV were adding a 3ft lead to the animal with a 15mph crosswind.

YES! 3 ft!!!

Now you tell me how many of these 750 yd shooters know how far they need to lead with a 27 kt crosswind. Maybe we have some physics majors on here who are just awesome.

...

What you are failing to realize is that 3 ft of wind drift is a constant for that distance and wind. In other words, it's repeatable every single time. So the drift doesn't matter whether it's 6 inches or 6 feet- as long as it's reproducible.

That being said, it's up to the shooter to determine before pulling the trigger what the wind speed is (Kestrel wind meter), whether it is constant or variable, whether the direction is constant or variable, and whether the wind changes direction or speed along the flight of the bullet path toward the target. If the wind conditions are above 10 mph and variable, then you can get into some serious wind compensation errors. It usually takes quite a bit of range time to learn to read correctly the wind speed and direction by reading mirage, the use of wind meters, and other subtle signs downrange such as leaf/tree/grass movements. No one should attempt to shoot at that distance without feeling certain of the wind direction/speed/variability. But if you have that constant wind speed/ direction... then it doesn't even matter what the drift is... you KNOW it from your drift chart from having shot at that distance in those wind conditions.

One of my emphasis is that wind speed is not constant across hilly terrain. A wind that might be 15mph on your hill might be 32 mph on the other side of that second hillside that your shooting at.

As Bullzeye said "That being said how many times hunting do you have that much time to figure those things out?". You will figure it out when you gut shot the deer or hit him in the leg.

You will then say "Awww man, that sucks. I guess those winds over there were a lil stronger than what they are over here almost 1/2 mile away".

And really and truly, I am just bored to tears because the serious deer hunting forum is a ghost town this time of year so this gives us a good bickering topic. LOL!

Usually all the time in the world. If the deer is moving fast at that distance, you shouldn't be shooting in the first place.

But even if you're starting from scratch (no info), it takes a couple of seconds to get a wind speed/direction, 4 or 5 sec to get an accurate range, a couple more to consult your drop chart, and another couple seconds to spin the turrets. Add another 2-3 seconds to get on target. So, usually around 15 sec once you get proficient.

It's even better with a spotter who determines wind speed/ direction and range for you. All you have to do is spin the turrets and get on target.

But a big part of the long-range game is knowing when NOT to shoot. I would guess I only shoot 10% of the animals that come out at that distance. If you can't choose to pass up that 150" buck because conditions aren't perfect, they you shouldn't be playing the game. (In fact, my cousin DID pass up a 160" deer at 700 yards 3 years ago because he wouldn't stop for a shot.)

I'm not saying that it would be a shot that is an ideal one to take, but I know several guys that have the ability and the right equipment to make that shot. As far of the "that ain't huntin" comments, you guys constantly make judgements based on your personal preferences and ability (or lack of in this case). To me the guy that takes a 750 yard shot and humanely kills the animal has done more than the guy that pops one at 100 yards with the ol' 06. To make that kind of shot you have spent the money to get the right gun built and top quality optics on it. You have spent countless hours developing handloads and shooting your rifle. I have the same respect for those guys that I do for the traditional bowhunter that practices all year. Its all about knowing your equipment and limitations. But hey, to each his own. Just enjoy yourself and follow the game laws and I dont care what you use.
