Kids grew up with da yoopers..but, in all seriousness it's a religion here..not just a passing thing but a religion handed down from generation to generation...if you are a deer camp person here it effects who you marry and what and when your family has vacation...Country people here and in TN have alot in common...both talk with accents, both love country, both love family and both are deep in tradition

Michigan is a peninsula and is divided into two parts...the Upper Peninsula and the Lower Peninsula and they are connected by the Mackinaw (Mackinac) Bridge. On the west side of the Mackinaw Bridge is Lake Michigan and on the east side is Lake Huron....after crossing the bridge you'll eventually get to Lake Superior...three of the great lakes. If you live "below" the bridge or in the lower peninsula you are considered a "troll" (get it, below the bridge) and if you live above the bridge or in the Upper Peninsula you are a Yooper...(U P er). I was married to a Yooper for 25 years and her family referred lovingly to me as a troll and of course I called them dam yoopers. They speak a funny language up there..not like anything you have ever heard...nor me either at first...My wife called me Sisu when I did something worthy and manly like split wood...she called me buskahosus when she was mad at me. Sisu means roughly "tough guy" or "macho guy" in Finn and buskhosus means "little sh+t pants" also in Finn...by the way, Finnish people rule the UP....How's that for a boring explanation?

I go to deer camp in Newaygo County, nowhere near the UP but noticed last time that one of the neighbors had a "got sisu?" bumper sticker on his truck.

and, as Coach says, it's amazing how much social impact the first day of deer season has up there. when I lived in Cadillac in the late 70s something like 800-thousand hunters would hit the woods on opening day... numbers are down some now but still enormous. and quite a few of them don't touch a gun or go into the woods from one deer season to the next, safety is a real issue.

I wanted to come back to this. There has been a baiting ban in the northeast corner of the lower peninsula for many years due to TB. That is the ban Bryan is referring to.

It's amazing how many hunters show up at camp on November 14. Fire a round or two, to be sure their gun is still "on", and then they are ready to hunt the next morning. Having not had the gun out of the case for the past 11 1/2 months.

They sit in the same spot, and watch the same trail they have been hunting for 20 years. Then when they don't see deer it is the DNR's fault. But that is a subject for another time.
