Baiting has been illegal in the lower peninsula for the last two seasons.

Bob,

Thinks for giving us some inside scoop.

Couple more questions:

1) Is baiting still legal on the upper peninsula?

2) Considering Michigan's long history of baiting being an accepted hunting practice, why was it made illegal?

Thanks.

To reduce the spread of Bovine TB that was occurring at bait sites.

I don't know what is involved with the Memorandum of Understanding.

I talked with Matt Ross form QDMA on Tuesday about another subject. I asked him just what the MOU meant. He said it had to do with the exchange of information between the two groups, but beyond that he didn't know much either. He said the next time he talks with Kip Adams he would ask him what all is involved.

Seems to me that it turned out that there was no proof whatsoever that deer touching noses at a bait pile increased the spread...It's possible I'm wrong, I've been concentrating my efforts in TN for the last two years

Thanks.
Baiting is still legal in the upper peninsula.

In 2002 a Governor's task force on CWD put together a plan of what to do if CWD was found in Michigan. One of the items said if CWD comes within 50 miles of either peninsula, baiting would be banned in that peninsula. In late summer of 2008, CWD was discovered in one doe in a privately owned herd in Kent County. That triggered the ban per the 2002 CWD plan.

Many bait hunters didn't like the idea that they couldn't bait when CWD was only found in a captive herd, and not in wild deer.

If it was up to the DNR, baiting would be permanently banned state wide. But, between hunters complaining to their legislators and the Natural Resource Commission(the NRC has the final say on all DNR hunting recommendations), you never know whether or not the ban will last.

Good stuff Bob...for my TN brothers, Kent County is...the western part of the state about mid state...the largest river in the state is Grand River and it runs thru Kent...go there quite often.
