In some localities most deer will avoid water.
In other localities most deer will take to water like a duck.
Just depends on how they have become habituated to water.

However, just like most deer will usually cross a large open field mainly under the cover of darkness, same seems to be the case for their crossing large open bodies of water --- they prefer doing it in the dark. But I've personally seen many deer swimming during daylight.

Thought you might enjoy seeing how fast one can go several hundred yards, quiet & fast across a lake.

Wes,

Thanks for sharing...I'd like to see that one swimming, nice deer.
I'd have to baptize that one on the other side....

I have seen them swim in a heartbeat from one small peninsula to another here on the lakes in E. TN if pressured. I have also seen them swimming literally back and forth across canals or creeks in W. TN. You think you might have them bottlenecked on a peninsula or along a waterway and they prove you're wrong. I don't know if they do it if they don't have to, but if they're pressured at all they can easily use the water for escape.

Seen em swimming between some of the islands and the main shore out at Lake Barkley. Usually early in the morning.

The pet video was awesome.

I've seen non-pressured deer actually seem to enjoy swimming.
Again, think it has to do mainly with how they've been habituated with water, and seems some individual deer do it more or less than others. Those that live around lots of water will often use swimming as just a simple short-cut. In some respects, deer may see a lake similarly to a large open field. Both are somewhat a barrier, sometimes skirted, sometimes crossed.

I live basically on the lake, we see deer swimming in the lake all the time. Dry lake bed with a creek running into the lake. They will tear that place up in the summer time.

Seen a doe swim across center hill a couple of years ago in July. The deer picked the widest part of the lake and ended up at the bluff at the mouth of Indian creek. After watching it almost get hit by several different ski and pleasure boats, we follewed close enough to keep it from getting hit. I have never seen a deer so exahsted in my life.

Deer are very good swimmers and actually pretty at home in the water. The deer in the videos were just taking their time, one actually scared can swim hard enough to have about half the shoulders and back above the water and can cover some distance in a hurry.
