I started out with a NEF 243 when I was 7. It had a youth stock on it.

Both my Grandson's use a 243 single shot H&R. One is 6 and the other is 7. Open sights with true glow. It works well for us and they shoot year round. I also put a limbsaver recoil pad on them it helped a lot...I started both my daughters with 243's as well. Good Luck and what memories you will have. that is the kind of gun my buddy has and the one we let her hold she is a small girl and can't hardly reach the trigger when it is up to her shoulder but at her age they grow like weeds so maybe we will get things ironed out before the time comes that is why we are trying to figure this out now and not wait to the last minute
can't wait to start making those memories

Okay, for the price of the gun you can cut it down for her and still put the recoil pad on. A youth model 243 is what my wife shoots. She is small too. There is a company I can't remember the name but they make a growth stock it click out and grows with the child. You might want to ask the others maybe they know the company.....

My daughter had the same problem. i installed a bi-pod on the front so she could hold it up and put a red dot scope on it to increase eye relief. (A pistol scope would have worked too). I found the main problem for her was reaching the trigger when she tried to get the scope lined up. She also wasn't strong enough to hold the gun up on her own. She shoots a Rossi Youth model .243.

Like what I heard you all saying about the red dot scopes and eye relief. I have one here at the house I may have to put on my granddaughters rifle.
Havnt heard to much about the AR (black) rifles with the collapsable stocks. Not sure what rifles, other than the ARs and a few shotguns you can put them on. Any suggestions?

you can put them on any of the rifles, like any scope the more $ you can spend on 1 the better it will perform during certain conditions,mike243

Are you referencing the red dot or the collapsible stocks? Heck, if I could get a collapsible for a Rossi, that would be great. It could be a shooter for all sizes of kids then.
EDIT: Just found it...anywhere from 52-70 bucks. Looks like Im gonna get one. One dealer even has a recoil pad with it. Should be able to use it w/ the 22/243/20ga. Hoping that even my 4yr old grandson can shoot it.

Got my daughter a H&R 7mm-08 youth model and cut another inch off the stock. The factory recoil pad will mount back up after pre drilling for the screw holes. I loaded up some 120 grain Sierra Pro Hunters at a reduced load. Recoil is minimal. We put a bi-pod on it and eye relief was still a concern so I put a burris Timberline Scope on it which has up to 5" eye relief. She took her first deer with it this year at age 7. She loves shooting the gun.

Both my boys started and one still shoots a .243 IMO absolutely the best and most accurate round available for kids.

LOL, Not in my eyes. I have compared both side by side on the bench and the .243 is more accurate with less recoil. Then we took the kids hunting, and once again the .243 outperformed the 7mm08 in the field as well, with better performace, better knockdown power/blodtrails, with similar shots. Its funny you posted this, as myself and a friend took 4 kids hunting on a juvenile hunt just a few years ago. I had 2 shooting a .243 and he had his 2 grandkids shooting the 7m08. We went to the range and shot both guns together, then the kids all hunted the same farm in KY together on the hunt as well. He no longer owns a 7m08 if that tells you anything about the results we had over 4 days, starting at the range and ending with deer on the ground. I was actually really surprised with the 7m08, as i was expecting much more out of it. I have another friend that hunts a lot and shoots even more, he is constantly trying new calibers and actually does some testing for 2 different ammo companies, and I wasnt surprised when he later told me that he had tried 2 different 7m08's, with a variety of ammo, and was disgusted as well and moved on to another caliber after marking that one off as undesirable!

obviously my opinion and experience is the polar opposite.

i won't bore you with the details of my experiences. both my boy and my nephew shoot 7mm08's with nothing less than stellar results. i actually have very little experience with the 243 and neither were good.

looks like you guys should meet over at the range with the boys for a little shoot off. Sounds like fun, Im all in!! My 11 yr old is absolutely deadly with a rifle. Im pretty confident with a good rest he can outshoot most men, and he's a Lefty. He has moved up to a litle Mtn rifle in .308 and he has fallen in love with it. My 8 yr old stays in trouble with his Momma for killing everything in the neighborhood, lol he got a good 1200ft per second break action pellet rifle for his bday and once we got his scope dialed in he has killed everything thats legal. He brings squirrels and rabbits home daily and I bet he's killed over 100 Starlings and even a few Crows! Im blessed in the fact they both love to hunt and they spend a lot of time looking through a scope! Im sure they would absolutely love to have a friendly shooting match, loser buys lunch and the ammo used! They keep me broke up buying ammo! lol
