The QDMA has been providing assistance and advice to the MI DNR for years.

They have different problems in MI than we Southeastern States do, in that they have nearly as many hunters as deer. Bag limits alone won't solve buck over-harvest problems there, just as they didn't for PA. PA had to go to more drastic measures to increase buck age structure, and parts of MI have done so as well. Plus the northern sections of MI, especially the UP, have real concerns over winter-kill (it must be fatored in to the harvest equation, unlike southern state which experience virtually no winter-kill).

Deer license sales by year:

* 2004 1,706,953
* 2005 1,566,336
* 2006 1,549,207
* 2007 1,544,043
* 2008 1,604,027
* 2009 1,567,557

And there are roughly 1.35 million deer. So, Michigan has more hunters than deer..

One thing that is not accounted for is that in Michigan many people buy a license and go to deer camp for one week. It's a tradition and for the most part they are there to bond with their buddies and hunting is not primary. This is the only time they are in the woods all year and one of the days is to travel to camp and one to travel home where the following day they will be back in their suit in their offices.

The weekend warriors are also license buyer and they have two weekends to hunt as a rule. In Michigan the season opens Nov 15 regardless of the day that falls on and closes on Nov 30. This group is also lucky to take a deer since these two weekends are the only time they are in the woods all year and it's usually public land.

On another thread
http://www.tndeer.com/tndeertalk/ubbthre...&gonew=1#UNREAD
there was discussion regarding whether we in Tennessee were getting "our money's worth" with what some think is a high license cost.

Compare the deer hunting in TN to Michigan.
We have somewhere between 5 and 15 deer living in Tennessee per hunting license sold. Our rifle (not limited to shotguns or muzzleloaders) deer season is one of the longest in the U.S. Then we have 2 full weeks of muzzleloader rifle deer season on top of that. Not to mention, we have a 3-buck limit, and hunters in the northern part of the state don't have to compete with wolves for the deer (like they do in northern Michigan).

But they do allow "baiting" in Michigan, and most hunters still don't kill a deer.

Counting my blessings . . . . . .

Those numbers are somewhat misleading. The numbers Coach posted are of total tags sold, not the number of hunters. The most recent Deer Harvest Report available is for 2008. The report lists a total of 733,998 individuals purchased at least one deer license. The 1,604,027 is the total number of licenses sold, not the number of individual hunters.

Also, the last time I was in a meeting with DNR Big Game specialist Rod Clute, Michigan had between 1.7 and 1.8 million deer, pre-season, not 1.35 million.

Baiting has been illegal in the lower peninsula for the last two seasons.
