How would the deer population in the state of Tennessee change if it were banned for 3 years? Would it become a so called Trophy state?

I'm no expert but I say no. it would become over-populated in some areas and the poor nutrition would cause small racks.

You think it would become that overpopulated in just three years?

In two years, if no deer were taken out, the herd would be ridiculously overpopulated.....actually, in just one year, you would begin to see a big change.

not only would Tn. not be a trophy state, but killing bigger deer would be even harder (until the food ran out)simply because the more mature deer would not have to move much to find all the does they wanted.

In three years, the devastation caused by deer eating everything in sight (at least in my area)and the starvation and spread of disease would be so damaging that it would take even longer to recover than it took to do the damage....IMO.

More deer...less food.

less food...more concetration of deer and less nutrition to grow healthier deer.

more concentration of deer....more disease and starvation.

we will never see this happen, ever.

The population could spiral completely out of control, or nothing could happen too dramatic. Lots of variables come into play.

This was just a hypothetical question. I would never want to see this happen just looking to get opinions on what you guys think it(tennessee deer heard) would do.

Could some areas be overpopulated right now? Could the reason for the harvest being down (2-3%) in the past few years mean there were a few too many?

Overpopulated now?Probably only in the suburbs somewhere.Seems like if there were mor, they would be easier to kill, not harder, but I dont know for sure.

A healthy deer herd can double in size every two years. We could in no way shape or form handle 150% more deer than we have now.

It can vary dramatically. An agricultural area can support far more deer than expansive areas of mature hardwoods. Mature hardwood habitat can be "maxed out" at 10 deer per square mile. Large-scale agricultural habitat can easily handle 60+ deer per square mile (although the farmers won't like it!).

Honestly, I believe the implementation of Unit L in the highest density areas followed by the '07 EHD outbreak took care of most areas that were over-populated or were approaching over-population.

Do you think there are animals within the state now that are carrying ehd?

EHD isn't carried by deer. It is carried by small biting midges (tiny black flies). Hemhorragic Disease is fairly endemic in southern deer, in that it is present every year. But big outbreaks occur every 4 to 7 years, with the biggest outbreaks usually occurring in years experiencing a late summer drought.

seriously...in Haywood County, just one season of no deer hunting and they would have to hire people to pick the deer up off the roads.......the insurance people would be losing their minds.....

now, the coyotes and other predators might like this idea and might get pretty fat , but ........

A nice topic to think about what MIGHT happen if there was no hunting for a few years.....I don't think many people think about the devastation that would take place.....

thanks for the topic. I think I'll kill more deer next season...haha

First off, that would never happen. But there is no doubt in my mind that there would be hosses coming out of the woodwork that 4th year. \:D BUT I would NEVER want to not hunt for 3 years....HA I'd go insane. I remember my dad and uncles telling me stories about when they opened up LBL years ago after it had been closed. They said they cant even explain how many and how big the bucks were that came out of there. They said that they didnt even hunt...just stayed at the check-in stations looking at all the monsters. Everytime they tried to leave, here came another truck pullin in with the rack taller than the bed. I dont know about yall, but seeing deer like that is just motivation for me to get in the woods \:\)

I'm not a biologist, but I see something very biologically wrong with a state closing the deer season for just one year, much less a few years. In the end, there would be MANY more negatives than positives (Like 100 to 1). I dont see anything wrong with a large tract of land, but not a whole dang state \:D

Yes, there would be more mature deer. But the deer herd would be so over-populated that most deer would be severely nutritionally stressed, leading to stunted bodies and racks.

Maybe we could go no buck hunting for a single season and shoot the cramp out of the does and then we would be like Texas!
