I finally took my Hamilton County bow kill to Ben Layton to get the deer scored yesterday, in Crossville. He is a nice guy. I don't know how to do links and such but if you want to see the buck (pic) and read the score it is in the Tennessee Deer Registry for Hamilton County. It is the 2009 bow killed non-typical.

It dressed out nearly 190.

Over the last couple years, I've spent a bunch of time pondering such things as gross vs. net scores. The Boone and Crockett scoring system. Tenn. Deer Registry and all kinds of related topics. Kinda makes my head hurt. I've killed several "good" bucks. Several that GROSS Pope and Young. A few more that GROSS Tennessee Registry. However, when the REALITY of the scoring "system" hits, these "good" bucks sometimes fall short of the record books. WHY...because of something called SYMETRY! It seems that many years ago, when this scoring system was first implemented it was used as a record for keeping up with the where and whens of bucks killed all over the country (and world). It probably wasn't intended to be "fair" to the buck's antlers.

Here is a realization I made just yesterday, while learning of this bucks score. It is entirely possible, to have a truly MASSIVE, long tined, wide spread, NON_SYMETRICAL buck score LOW while appearing VERY impressive. And have a average spread, PERFECTLY symetrical, average mass yet long tined 10 point score higher, even though the antlers weigh several pounds LESS than the non-symetrical buck.

This is because the difference between the two main beams, as well as the "abnormal" points count AGAINST your total score.

My buck GROSSED nearly 170 inches of antler (including about a 17 inch spread). But, as a typical, it NETTED about 136. This is still a GREAT buck but as a non-typical...the "abnormal points" COUNT. So, to give credit where credit was due, I thought it better to go non-typical.

Now I know why MANY hunters only talk in terms of gross score when talking about a buck. I wish someone would start a system that counted ALL inches of antler, no deductions, and inside spread only. THis way, we'd have the inside spread and ALL bone measured. In other words, the BTR INCLUDING inside spread credit.

BTW, thanks Daryl!

Great deer 102! Official B&C scores are for a publication or a
book. I have seen many huge bucks that were officially scored
lower than a much lesser looking buck.

I would take the total inches over a net score......ANYTIME.

CONGRATULATIONS on your.......170" buck!

I'm missing something. That is one hell of a buck. But why is he non-typ. Is there something the picture is not showing or am I just going blind as well as deaf?

Now I know about scoring. Scored a few in my day. But unless there is something I can't see, that is a mainframe eight with deductions.

Course, I have been wrong before. I can't see enpough dedicya to make him a non-typ. But who the he11 cares? That is one super deer. Congratulations.

Thanks fellas, and BTW John
15 scorable points. Lots of "character" points near the bases and on the back not visible in photo. 13 plus inches of irregular bone.

I am not a scorer and did not know it could go non either until Monday. This was the first buck I ever got Officially scored. Funny thing, I took my best Illinois buck as well, thinking he'd go upper 140's to 150 net. He too, is a main frame eight, pretty clean with ONE sticker off G-2 (about 5 inches). I guessed him at a tad over 153 gross. He grossed right at 150 P/Y. After deductions for that sticker and SYMETRY, he dropped to 134 and change. A real "slap in the face" for this deer also. I put pics of that deer on here a while ago. (actually David J did it for me).

Another point to ponder. THis buck has a split brow on his rt. Really cool looking. He also has GREAT character points. ALL TAKE AWAY FROM NET, FINAL SCORE typical.

My taxidermists and a couple other guys aged him at at least 6.5, though I really suck past about 4.5. I don't really care about age, in all honesty, in the public places I hunt, if a P/Y buck shows up while I am holding my bow, I don't care if he is 1.5.

Wes,
I appreciate the kind words. And yes, it was an old buck. But "proud" may not be the best word to describe how I felt about this GREAT animal. Confused might have been better.

In ALL honesty, it was an opportunity that I made good on. I had actually been told of this buck a few weeks earlier by a man I just happen to meet under some bizarre set of circumstances involving my 4-wheeler and his dog. I hope to get a published story out of the whole incident but we'll see.

I'd love to say that I am a GREAT bowhunter because I killed that buck or several of the other P/Y class bucks by which I've been blessed. I'd love to say that I knew where he lived and what he looked like because I had trail cam pics of him since birth. I'd love to say I had passed him up at 3.5 to let him grow. But I'd be LYING! Truth is, I had heard about a "big buck" in this area, found his sign by accident, and was (for lack of ANY other explanation) BLESSED with an opportunity to put an arrow through him. (and if that is not enough, I got to shoot him TWICE, once at 16 yards through the right lung, liver, and guts, and again when he stopped at 42 yards right up the old keyster and forward into the abdominal cavity.

I can honestly say that out of all the mature bucks I've killed, there was only ONE that I had laid eyes on pryor to me killing it. Now, don't get me wrong, I had found sign of big deer in the areas I have set up and killed many of my bucks, but only ONE time, had I targeted a SPECIFIC buck. And it grossed 150 on this past Monday.

I started bowhunting in 1981, and believe me, it did not take long to realize how tough it was going to be to kill a deer, ANY deer, with my bow. In 1999, as I was approaching my 100th bow kill, I began to entertain the idea of trying to kill mature bucks. The idea of trying to kill mature bucks, on purpose, with my bow, was daunting. In fact, on PUBLIC land, almost discouraging. I've tried some of the camera techniques used by the "Video Gurus" but in this part of the country, you are pretty much just helping to fill the shelves of the local pawn shops.

I, like most other hunters I know, simply can't afford to own parcels of land or pay for a guide service. So public is the only answer. It takes me lots TIME, research, LOTS of scouting, and paying close attention to VERY small details from what people say. Even at ball games by people who are not even hunters.

Yes, I'd say confused is the best way to describe how I've felt about this buck. How in the world did this guy exist and make it this long on PUBLIC land???

Why did he choose to make an appearance, in front of my stand at that time???

And MOST of all...how in the heck did his antlers get so big??? There is NO FOOD to speak of anywhere near this animal except acorns and forage. I have hunted this area since 1988 and have never even seen a deer CLOSE to his size or mass, though I did kill a 115 class that was about 5.5 not far from him.

And to make things even more confusing to me, I had already killed the "buck of a lifetime" that grossed 150. Seriously, my friends and I all agreed that there was no way I'd ever top that buck. I even sprinkled in a few more P/Y class bucks to top off my mature buck goals. I had no ambitions to ever try to better these deer and had in fact, have recently resigned myself to return to my bowhunting roots, and just enjoy my bowhunting for what it is, making CLEAN kills on legal deer while enjoying GREAT friends and family in the outdoors.

THe ONLY POSSIBLE conclusion I can come up with about all this is simply, there is someone in charge of all this that has other ideas. I am just along for the ride, and the oportunities this ride gives me. I've been told, he has every single hair on my head counted.
