Thats pretty good and I agree to an extent I think alot of the stuff advertised on the outdoor channel and some mags is all a money making gimmick but thats what they are in business for is to make money I guess you just gotta keep that in mind when your looking for new gear try to cut through the garbage. And alot of the guys/girls on the outdoor channel are handed oppourtunity that most of us will never see, but I just can't help but be a Tiffany Lakoski fan \:\)

Les and I have talked about this many times. He and I left both magazines about the same time but not for the same reasons. When M.R. James sold Bowhunter, I bailed. When N.A. Whitetail was sold, I bailed. But Les is 100% correct.

We are not the only writers to quit. There are a lot of us. My only writing today is my newspaper column. But I am in a rather unique posititon for a writer. I am financially secure. If I had to write for a living, I would be pushing whatever product I was told to push. That's the way it works.

I applaud Les for taking a stand. Although I have done it on many occsasions, I didn't like standing alone.

Great commentary. My favorite lines were:

Many of the “pros” who entered the limelight were arrogant individuals who had a bachelor’s degree in baloney. I hate that many young, naive hunters worship these egotistical garbage-peddlers.

I couldn't agree more.

I also agree with:

"I think it is important for all sportsmen to ban together and take issue with 1) magazines that carry more advertising than stories, 2) television shows that promote high-fence hunters and severely altered film footage that deceives our youth hunters, and 3) “pro hunter” advertising campaigns that promote junk products."

Now I understand the first one. Magazines must sell advertising. But I do worry about what is advertised, as in do these products fall within the ethical guidelines the magazine is promoting?

But the 2nd and 3rd points are dead on the money. Once again my rany against "big buck" magazines and TV hunting shows. Most are utter garbage that too many hunters eat up hook, line and sinker.

Just read the entire article, and am in agreement with all --- very well stated.

I totally agree.

Really bothers me to see once respected publications to start advertising things totally incongruent with their former stated values.

And "utter garbage" is the best description yet for most of the "hunting" shows on TV. Those shows are doing more to hurt the future of hunting than anything else.

Very true, that's why I don't take it anymore. I still get Outdoor Life, I have since I was 10. Still like it but like all mags, it has BS also. \:\(

My North American Whitetail Magazine subscription is up for renewal but with Duncan Dobies departure so is my support. I will not buy NAW ever again .....especially if turkey starts showing up in it. Thats why i bought it was it was dedicated to whitetail deer hunting. Nothing against Turkey hunting...just saying.

In today's economy, you have to take it where you can get it. How many of you are boycotting NASCAR? How many of you have thrown your TV sets out?

I would rather read what you guys in the state of Tn think about each days current events and personal experiences than what any nationally published magazine has to say. What you folks experience each day in the pre rut till the ruts end is more valuable to me than anything written three months or a year ago which really doesnt contribute anything to my success today! Thanks for sharing your experiences.

You got that right. I turned down an assignment today on post season scouting. It wasn't even going to run until June. What the he11 good is that?

That is exactly why the internet is putting print media out of business.

Except of course, for my newspaper column which I write on Sunday and it runs on Wednesday. \:\)

I agree. Once it became a mouthpiece for one particular biologist--who in my opinion began writing highly dubious information to justify his highly questionable actions--I quit buying/reading the magazine.

That biologist owns a piece of the publication...I think. I got a pretty nasty note one time when I submitted an article taking exception with something he said.

For me I'm the opposite... I miss Duncan but I still get the mag. I like to see some of the places I've been in the past. Hunting is a big business weather you like it or not, its fact. I agree with someone who said there should not be turkey articles in NAW.
