I got a buddy down in FL that going to purchase a crossbow.. He wants to know what model and what to look for when purchasing one... One thing he mentioned was 22" bolt vs 20" bolt. What do you guys think?

I'll give him the same advice I would give someone buying a vertical bow. Buy the one you like and can afford. I have three. I like all three of them. Theyu are all different brands.

Tell him to find a shop that has various brands and will let him "test drive" them all.
Then, let the crossbow pick him.
I prefer TenPoint crossbows.
Most crossbws use 20" arrows.

I just bought Barnett and had to put it together myself, but it was not difficult. I hope that doesn't happen to me

Barnett is a cheap bow and I've heard other stories like mine but it is rare.you should be ok just make sure everything is tight on the bow and nothing is loose.I also know people who had them for years with no problems.

I've had mine since they made them legal, some folks will shoot them a few times & & think they can now make 50yard shots,if they couldn't make a 50 yard shot with a reg bow more than likely they cant with a xbow.range estimate is just as important with them as a reg bow,its hard to shoot behind you while in a treestand,i have seen several deer lost with a xbow & most were due to piss pore guessing of distance & a shot of doe fever ,bsl i dont consider what barnett charges cheap,i consider what some of the others selling as too expensive ,i will put mine up against any for accuracy.now weight & quietness it wont win but i knew that when i got it.my brother had a horton, setting in catossa 1 morning before daylite a limb broke for no reason ,my buddy that was using it said he thought a branch was falling on him ,ruined a good day of hunting but horton fixed it at no cost.mike243

I meant barnetts are cheaply made.Lots of plastic parts.barnett and horton have had a lot of problems with bows.Excalibur is a much better made bow.

Ten point makes a good product as well. I bought one when I had shoulder surgery. They like 'em a lot though, very expensive!

The problem with Excalibur and and Ten Point is they are way out of my price range.
On another subject I was told to use fixed blade broad heads and the larger the better. I was thinking of going to a rage 2 blade for my compound bow and i have a lot of 100 gr thunderheads that are in good shape. Would you use the 100 gr or go with a 125 gr?

When I bought mine they told me to use expandables. I'd go with 100gr between those two. I shot 85's when I was shooting mine with great success. My shoulder has healed so now I use a compound bow again.

so the rage 2 blade would work for the crossbow as well. good to hear. I was told that an expandable may deploy before it got to the target due to the force it is propelled from the crossbow with.
thanks for all the help guys.

Well I don't like the rage and that is one I would worry about opening but others shoot it.I believe I would but an extra o ring in the middle with it just to be safe.I would guess a rage would put a huge hole in a deer with a crossbow.

i use the rocket or guess now they are trophy ridge.I have used them for years with my compound and crossbow.i have killed a lot of deer with them and they hold up well.
The side winder is a good head.I like atleast a 1 3/4 cut though and its only 1 1/2.I think the 2" cut of the hammerhead by rocket would be great in a crossbow. Most all heads exp. and fixed blade are pretty good anymore.i just don't like the rage because they are not a tough head and they are prone to open if you don't get them locked in good.
for fixed blades slick tricks and muzzy are hard to beat.fixed blades are just hard to tune sometimes in a crossbow.

Just my opinion. I shoot expandables. I won't name a brand because I no longer promote any product. I smiply found a quality expandable, and there are several, shot better due to the shock of leaving the bow. I know many who shoot fixed blades and love them. Buy a three pack of several and find the one you like the best. There is substitue for experimentation.
I have killed about 25 deer with a crossbow in the last four years and have probably used four different heads. They all worked just fine except one. That company is no longer in business, so don't worry about it.
