Northern lower Michigan is a fun area with snowmobiles used quite a bit in the winter for transportation. You can rent them fairly cheaply. Compared to the rest of the state the deer hunting there is better than the Upper Peninsula and not nearly as good as the southern counties. Cass City is located in the middle of the thumb part of the state. Michigan is shaped like a hand or mitt...so if you took your right hand and looked at the palm Cass City is in the middle of your thumb. I'm more familiar with the other side of the state by Pentwater and Ludington. Ferg is from Alpena area I believe and may have more first hand info.
In 2009 the DNR claimed that the deer kill was down 25-30% from the previous year in that area. Here's a contact that may be able to help you out first hand...he's the QDMA guy for that area.
Terry Muntz, President, Email: TMUNTZ@COOPELEV.COM 6151 Muntz Rd., Cass City, MI 48726, 989-872-8301
This is just a link on the deer decline...

This is one of my favorite magazines that you can read online:
michiganoutofdoors.com
The newspaper in that area is the Huron Daily Tribune:

And you can also go to mucc.org (Michigan United Conservation Club) for info

Thirty-plus years ago I filmed (with film, not video, this was the old days) a depredation hunt on a big bean farm not too far from where he's going - you could only kill deer in specific fields, we went out at night and spotlighted over two hundred of them in four hours. Just one was in a legal field, though... wonder how they knew?
May not still be true, but when I was up there in the late Seventies just about all of the country's supply of white beans came from the Thumb.

Looking at the aerials, there seems to be cropland surrounding this farm. Looks like a mix of 40% crops 60% woods. Should be good from the looks of it.

I have hunted michigan only once and it was a blast. Everyone takes the day off and they have contests at all the local stores. There is also a ton of public land. Good luck. The deer I saw were huge in body mass

The thumb has a reputation for producing big bodied, big racked deer...wait are we still talking whitetails. Seriously, I am from Bay City originally, I retired in Millbrook Ala after 26 years in the Air Force...get you butt up there and kill some big deer. Holy Crap 1000 acres of farm land to hunt for free... Gun season is fixed, 15-30 Nov and if I am not mistaken in the southern lower pennisula you must use a shotgun with slugs or buckshot and I think Cass City might fall under that rule. If you need a personal escort to show you around MI PM me...

markjoz is right...shotgun...not as many deer, but big deer. But, I don't want to bust the bubble...2009 deer season for that area was off 30% from the year before. this link shows you the boundaries of shotgun vs rifle

When I lived there, you could also use Muzzleloaders in the Shotgun zone. I assume it's still that way. I preferred to use the ML over smooth-bore shotguns, but if you've got a shotgun with rifle barrel or tube I'd seriously consider that.

Yep, Jakeway, it's still like that...and that's how I hunt also. I use the mz instead of the shotgun
