i dont know the whole story but i work in an auto parts store, and i had a woman come in the other night looking for a grill for her van. i was asking helping her and she told me that wile driving back to tn from NC she hit a big dark colored cat. she said she has never seen a cat of this size before and was positive it was not a dog or a deer. she said she couldn't stop to look at it or anything but it did do a number on her van.

a patient i had who came to my center last year brought in pics of a large cat on his 5000 acres in west tn. the reason he started looking into this cat was that on this farm, they found a missing calf up in a tree. a long story short, he gave a pretty convincing story. its funny you run into guys here that think absolutly there can be no big cats here when they (the big cats) use to live here back when.

At one time, I would have agreed with you, stik. But I've personally had some 1st-hand experiences where there is no doubt there have been cougars traveling thru Tennessee. Whether or not they were truly "wild" is another question.
But truly "wild" cougars have been officially documented in Southern Illinois, only a few miles from the north portion of LBL, as well as in Arkansas and Missouri. Sure, the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers are a significant barrier, but they didn't stop the coyote and they're not going to stop the western cougar's migration eastward.

For those who have a serious interest . . . . . . . . http://blogs.ngm.com/.a/6a00e00982269188330120a5b2b2de970c-pi
http://www.easterncougarnet.org/bigpicture.html Also note the recent Class I Confirmation in Northwestern Georgia. This could be an indicator of some established Florida populations moving northward, in which case their is no major river barrier.
Outside of Florida, The Cougar Network has documented one confirmation in Georgia. This was originally thought to be an escaped captive but DNA analysis indicated that it had actually migrated from the Florida panther area in south Florida. That is a migration of hundreds of miles!
There is continued speculation that the Great Smokey Mountains National Park (in Tennessee and North Carolina) could have harbored a remnant population of cougars. This is based on the fact that about 20% of the park was never significantly disturbed by logging or cleared for agriculture. In addition, there have been numerous credible sighting reports over the past three decades, some by wildlife professionals. However, no hard evidence has been produced to date, despite continued searching.
Here's a particularly good read: http://www.easterncougarnet.org/KnoxNews%20Flora%20And%20Fauna.htm

I have to tell you that this "cougar" sighting thing in Tennessee is the exact same thing going on in southern Michigan...and has been for almost as long as I can remember. Reports of black cougars, black panthers seen in Howell, MI or in Claire, MI...lotta people see them but not a lot of pics either here or TN

I'll say this, if one is in Tn. I believe it would be a pet that someone had and turned loose. I do know a Preacher that said he got up close and personal with one in the Cherokee National Forrest.

I read an interesting article on the correlation between hogs and cougars. It has been found that in areas where there are large hog populations, the population of cougars are also growing (large supply of food). This comes from a study in Texas. There has also been a confirmed cougar killed by police in Louisiana last year.
They are in alot of states surrounding Tennessee so I'm sure that it wont be long befor evidence pops up.
I personally have never seen anything close to cougar sign in Tennessee but have herd some crazy screams and seen some big tracks in the swamps of southeast Louisiana.

I'm telling you I was a skeptic forever I thought everyone was crazy, and I don't know about the rest of the state but in Fayette County around the Loosahatchie they are around I heard stories from old timers for ever and never believed.I believe it now whether it be a cougar or everyone down here calls them panther they are around maybe only a few but they are around. Or I am just as crazy as everyone else.

Had one on my farm (regular cougar, not a black panther) back in '95. He was seen twice, once up close (50 yards away) up in a tree. He left quite a few sets of tracks as well. I suspect it was a captive and got loose. Made me nervous as heck during turkey season. Never seen again after that year, no more tracks after that year.

I had several of my adjoining property owners on my tract in Livingston County, KY telling me they had seen BIG CAT. KY fish and wildlife told me that I could have one, but not a native cat. Said that people were bringing them in from South America illegally, then would get sacred once they got big. Would take them out to the country and let them go, said LBL had a pair, but they had DNA on them and they were from SA also. Also said most of the people getting them were in the Drug Business.

I have no doubt in my mind there are numerous folks who believe they have seen cougars in Tennessee. How's that for an official statement! B ut some of the cougars were on space ships !

I've hunted with hounds from one end of the state to the other for 25yrs. and nothing would surprise me. I'm not a biologist but I've found bear sign as far south as outter Chattanooga ,and everywhere north of here. Feral hogs are exploding in certain areas. I only hope we don't start with a cat problem.

What I find amazing in this time in history, is that with all the technology out there, these cat stories never have any evidence of being real. Think of all the bizarre things we get pics of over the year, and yet still no evidence of these "big cats". There are none, is why.

So now God and big cats are hanging out together?
No offense BH, but that statement you make is laughable at best.
Show me 1 verified picture of a track, kill, animal, fur, claw, or den from this area. This is not the Amazon Rainforest, there is a house dang near every few miles, 4 wheeler trails everywhere, nothing is that remote even in this part of the state.

believe me, there are areas where I live that big cats could come through going north, south or any direction and they would never be seen and probably no tracks be seen either.
Like most people, you choose to believe only what you want and give no credence to something else that's POSSIBLE. The last time I checked, there are no fences to keep any animal from going where it pleases......I remember years ago when no one ever saw a armadillo around here, but now they are as common as the opposum.....at least in west tn.
You ask for proof that a big cat COULD migrate through here without being detected..........I grew up in the Hatchie Bottoms and I assure you that something could come through there without being detected......especially if they have the ability to climb trees......and especially during the Summer when foliage is abundant.
I'm not saying this is true, but I am saying that it is possible......
Just like I believe that it is possible that we are not alone in the universe and it is possible that there is a bearded man sitting on a cloud watching over us all....
Unless proven IMPOSSIBLE, anything IS POSSIBLE......the SAINTS are in the SUPERBOWL...enuff said...?
hahahahaha

Honest... visit "Outback" in Jackson and I will show you plenty of cougars, both young and old ones, there are also bar flies and some old tigers there also, it sorta reminds me of a zoo, lol
Or a circus and your the ring master.
Chaney consider this your official invite to come to Louisville and vist Jim Porters Good Time Emporium (sp?). My single boys go there cougar slaying once or twice a year. They are thicker than hair on a dogs back in there I promise you.
As far as the feline cougar in TN, yes it is possible, but these are tangible things, I would like to see some concrete evidence

What I find amazing in this time in history, is that with all the technology out there, these cat stories never have any evidence of being real. Think of all the bizarre things we get pics of over the year, and yet still no evidence of these "big cats". There are none, is why. ever seen any evidence of a higher power...real "in your hands" evidence???? Just saying that if you can believe in something that you've never seen, then why not something else that's possible...... Yep, I have. Survived a severe medical issue, doctors didn't think I'd make it, that's real and "in my hands" enough for me! BH
doctors make mistakes all the time......simply put, I'm happy for your recovery and if you feel that GOD was responsible, then GREAT!! I'm not here to debate HIS existence, not at all. I'm just arguing that if you can believe in the existence of something that you have never seen, heard or actually touched (and no one has) then surely you can believe that it is possible for a big cat to walk through this area......
again, I am NOT saying that HE does not exist. I AM SAYING that it is POSSIBLE for a big cat to raom through here from time to time.
NO......I have no proof that they come through here on occasions, but I also have no PROOF that HE exists either. Some things you just have to have faith in.

BH there is proof everywhere you look of God's existence. How else can you explain all the varying forms of life on this planet? How can you explain how it all so intricately fits together and works? There is so much evidence of God's work in and around us constantly there is no disputing his existence.
However, the same cannot be said for big cats. There is ZERO proof that one has roamed through this state. Not one single shred of evidence.

Rather then speculate......SOMEONE PROVE THEIR EXISTENCE! It is just that simple, rather then passed down ghost stories, lets see some proof.
Is religion not SPECULATION? Don't we as human beings speculate that there is a heaven and that GOD does exist..?
Do we not speculate that someday we will see all of our dead relatives and friends and live forever?
Ever talked to anyone that has proof of this?
It's simply called faith and every argument about religion and the controversy concerning God's existence ends with this simple message...YOU MUST HAVE FAITH!!
I have faith that unless proven IMPOSSIBLE, then anything IS POSSIBLE!!!
I believe that a cat could walk through portions of the Bottoms around here and never be seen or leave any evidence that it was even here. Simply because , some areas have little human traffic at all, especially during non-hunting times of the year. Along many portions of the Bottoms there are no wheeler trails and places where even foot traffic is very difficult. During the Summer, no one goes down there and even during the Winter months, access is limited especially inside the REFUGE boundaries.
I never saw a bald eagle in this area until about 15 years ago. Now I see them regularly during the Winter.
I have hunted the Bottoms all of my life and have only seen one mink ......a red one. Until I started hunting Chaney ten years ago, I had never seen a river otter......even though I have grown up on that river.
My point is that just because we are out there does not mean that we will see, hear or find any evidence that certain critters are there....believe me, that's the way they prefer it...
Gotta have faith.....!
And before someone turns this into a religious thread and calls me a non-believer, let me clear the air by saying......I DO BELIEVE!
I believe in everything until someone proves it false......the lack of evidence of something's existence does not necessarily provide proof to me.

So these cats must hover over the ground so they don't leave tracks, they never cross roads on their travels where they might be hit, they never feed which is why we can't find kills, they do not defecate as there is no large cat feces to be found, they do not ever walk by one of the thousands of trail cams we have out in this state, and they are never photoed by any of the folks most of which have cell phones that have a camera.
So tell me if they are migrating up and down river corridors how come no one can produce one iota of evidence to prove this? Because it does not exist.

i dont know the whole story but i work in an auto parts store, and i had a woman come in the other night looking for a grill for her van. i was asking helping her and she told me that wile driving back to tn from NC she hit a big dark colored cat. she said she has never seen a cat of this size before and was positive it was not a dog or a deer. she said she couldn't stop to look at it or anything but it did do a number on her van. If it did that much damage then somebody should be able to go to site and find a dead cat! Should have got more info on location. I know hind sight is 20/20.

I used to hunt down in the Hatchie bottoms back in he early 90's. I don't know if it is true or not but I did picked up a young fellow on my four wheeler one morning that was yelling and screaming running across the middle of a cotton field in the big Hatchie bottom trying to get to me. When he got close to me he was at the point of tears and scared to death. He was lost. He said he had run into a mountian loin laying across a tree that was hung in a another tree. I pick him up and carried him back to our camp and then drove him around till he found were he was supposed to be. He was totally lost and refused to leave out side's The other camp was looking for him. He was one scared young fellow. I don't beleve he will ever return to the bottoms again. Being lost is one thing but being scared and lost that is another.

Last august I was driving and out of nowhere a cat trotted out in front of me. Now my first thought was it was a big bobcat but just then it hit me-its got a tail as long as it was. The thing just stopped in the median and looked at me as I stopped to look at it. I was in such shock that I didnt think to take a picture. Now Im the guy that every time someone says they see one that they are full of it. The only thing I can figure that this one was a cougar and it was a pet because it wasnt the least bit afraid of me and it was next to many houses. Now before you guys think I am crazy,I promise I wasnt drinking or smoking anything.
