BSK or BGG,

So let me see if I got this...

QDMA is good for a local land owner who wants to manage his property. So, I would not go wrong by joining the organization as a local property owner. I have mixed feelings on the whole thing.
Is it worth my time and money to pursue?

I've heard so much about QDMA. But proof is in the pudding.....And money drives the train...

It makes you wonder what drove the state of MS to change their regs. Not that I don't agree with protecting yearling bucks, but was it necessary to enforce statewide? I don't believe they have solid data to support the decision, unless I'm missing something.

Double-D

By all means join them. They have a lot of good things to offer the private deer manager.

West-

Missippii has been protecting their yearlings with an antler restriction for a long time (maybe a decade or so). They used to do it with a statewide 4-point minimum rule. But that rule was ineffective in most areas. It was either too strict or not strict enough to protect the yearlings. Just this past year they decided to be more specific with their antler restriction such as the antler beam length and the different deer units.

It sure has. Like I said, it was a pretty disappointing report. ;\)

BGG,

Yeah, I know I was raised in MS and still hunt there, matter of fact i'm up a tree right now! I never thought the 4pt rule ever did protect the yearlings very well. My question would be how do they really know they needed to get more strict?

That why they put these beside the data:

* data not available
** data from antler-point-restriction counties (non-antler-point- restriction counties)
*** data from check stations and DMAP

How in the world do you lump these two data sources together?

Like I said in a previous post, if I only submitted our DMAP data, Tennessee would have a 12% yearling harvest. The data source paints a completely different picture.

They use antler data from different parts of the state to make their restrictions more regionally specific. The data they use comes from WMAs and DMAP clubs.
